Psalm 69:1-3

Psalm 69

A Plea for Rescue

For the choir director: according to “The Lilies.”(A) Of David.

Save me, God,
for the water has risen to my neck.(B)
I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing;
I have come into deep water,
and a flood sweeps over me.(C)
I am weary from my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail, looking for my God.(D)

Psalm 69:13-16

13 But as for me, Lord,
my prayer to you is for a time of favor.
In your abundant, faithful love, God,
answer me with your sure salvation.(A)
14 Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink.
Let me be rescued from those who hate me
and from the deep water.(B)
15 Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me
or the deep swallow me up;
don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me.(C)
16 Answer me, Lord,
for your faithful love is good.
In keeping with your abundant compassion,
turn to me.(D)

Psalm 69:30-36

30 I will praise God’s name with song
and exalt him with thanksgiving.(A)
31 That will please the Lord more than an ox,
more than a bull with horns and hooves.(B)
32 The humble will see it and rejoice.
You who seek God, take heart!(C)
33 For the Lord listens to the needy
and does not despise
his own who are prisoners.(D)

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them,(E)
35 for God will save Zion
and build up[a] the cities of Judah.
They will live there and possess it.(F)
36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it,
and those who love his name will live in it.(G)

Genesis 4:17-5:5

The Line of Cain

17 Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son. 18 Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the first[a] of the nomadic herdsmen. 21 His brother was named Jubal; he was the first[b] of all who play the lyre and the flute. 22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives:

Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words.
For I killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for striking me.
24 If Cain is to be avenged seven times over,
then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times!

25 Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, “God has given[c] me another offspring[d] in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 A son was born to Seth(A) also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.(B)

The Line of Seth

This is the document containing the family[e] records(C) of Adam.[f] On the day that God created man,[g] he made him in the likeness of God; he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind.[h]

Adam was 130 years old when he fathered a son in his likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. Adam lived 800 years after he fathered Seth, and he fathered other sons and daughters. So Adam’s life lasted 930 years; then he died.

Romans 3:9-22

The Whole World Guilty before God

What then? Are we any better off?[a] Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews(A) and Greeks(B) are all under sin,[b](C) 10 as it is written:

There is no one righteous, not even one.
11 There is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away;
all alike have become worthless.
There is no one who does what is good,
not even one.[c](D)
13 Their throat is an open grave;
they deceive with their tongues.[d](E)
Vipers’ venom is under their lips.[e](F)
14 Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.[f](G)
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,
17 and the path of peace they have not known.[g](H)
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.[h](I)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(J) it speaks to those who are subject to the law,[i](K) so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment.[j](L) 20 For no one will be justified[k] in his sight by the works of the law,(M) because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.(N)

The Righteousness of God through Faith

21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed,(O) attested by the Law and the Prophets.[l](P) 22 The righteousness of God is through faith(Q) in Jesus Christ[m](R) to all who believe,(S) since there is no distinction.(T)
