Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Israel’s Unfaithfulness to God
106 Hallelujah!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures for ever.(A)
2 Who can declare the Lord’s mighty acts
or proclaim all the praise due him?(B)
3 How happy are those who uphold justice,
who practise righteousness at all times.(C)
4 Remember me, Lord,
when you show favour to your people.(D)
Come to me with your salvation
5 so that I may enjoy the prosperity
of your chosen ones,
rejoice in the joy of your nation,
and boast about your heritage.(E)
6 Both we and our ancestors have sinned;
we have done wrong and have acted wickedly.(F)
19 At Horeb they made a calf
and worshipped the cast metal image.(A)
20 They exchanged their glory[a][b]
for the image of a grass-eating ox.(B)
21 They forgot God their Saviour,
who did great things in Egypt,(C)
22 wondrous works in the land of Ham,[c]
awe-inspiring acts at the Red Sea.(D)
23 So he said he would have destroyed them –
if Moses his chosen one
had not stood before him in the breach
to turn his wrath away from destroying them.(E)
9 Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s elders, 10 and they saw(A) the God of Israel. Beneath his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as clear as the sky itself.(B) 11 God did not harm[a] the Israelite nobles; they saw(C) him, and they ate and drank.
4 You adulterous people![a] Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility towards God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.(A) 5 Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely?[b](B)
6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:
7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(D) 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.(E) 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.(F) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
