Psalm 128

Blessings for Those Who Fear God

A song of ascents.

128 How happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways!(A)
You will surely eat
what your hands have worked for.(B)
You will be happy,
and it will go well for you.(C)
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house,
your children, like young olive trees
round your table.(D)
In this very way
the man who fears the Lord
will be blessed.(E)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,
so that you will see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life(F)
and will see your children’s children!

Peace be with Israel.(G)

Joshua 10:12-14

12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

‘Sun,(A) stand still over Gibeon,
and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’
13 And the sun stood still
and the moon stopped
until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.

Isn’t this written in the Book of Jashar?[a]

So the sun stopped
in the middle of the sky
and delayed its setting
almost a full day.

14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to a man, because the Lord fought for Israel.(B)

Matthew 15:1-9

The Tradition of the Elders

15 Then(A) Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,(B) ‘Why do your disciples(C) break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.’[a](D)

He answered them, ‘Why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? For God said:[b] Honour your father and your mother;[c](E) and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.[d](F) But you say, “Whoever tells his father or mother, ‘Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,’ he does not have to honour his father.”[e] In this way, you have nullified the word of God[f] because of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

This people[g] honours me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.
They worship me in vain,
eaching as doctrines human commands.(G)[h]
