Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 96[a]
96 Sing to the Lord a new song.[b]
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord. Praise his name.
Announce every day how he delivers.[c]
3 Tell the nations about his splendor.
Tell[d] all the nations about his amazing deeds.
4 For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise;
he is more awesome than all gods.[e]
5 For all the gods of the nations are worthless,[f]
but the Lord made the sky.
6 Majestic splendor emanates from him;[g]
his sanctuary is firmly established and beautiful.[h]
7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations,
ascribe to the Lord splendor and strength.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves.[i]
Bring an offering and enter his courts.
9 Worship the Lord in holy attire.[j]
Tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
The world is established; it cannot be moved.
He judges the nations fairly.”
11 Let the sky rejoice, and the earth be happy.
Let the sea and everything in it shout.
12 Let the fields and everything in them celebrate.
Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes.
For he comes to judge the earth.
He judges the world fairly,[k]
and the nations in accordance with his justice.[l]
8 Therefore you must wait patiently[a] for me,” says the Lord,
“for the day when I attack and take plunder.[b]
I have decided[c] to gather nations together
and assemble kingdoms,
so I can pour out my fury on them—
all my raging anger.
For[d] the whole earth will be consumed
by my fiery anger.
9 Know for sure that I will then enable
the nations to give me acceptable praise.[e]
All of them will invoke the Lord’s name when they pray,[f]
and will worship him in unison.[g]
10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia,[h]
those who pray to me, my dispersed people,[i]
will bring me tribute.
11 In that day you[j] will not be ashamed of all your rebelliousness against me,[k]
for then I will remove from your midst those who proudly boast,[l]
and you will never again be arrogant on my holy hill.
12 I will leave in your midst a humble and meek group of people,[m]
and they will find safety in the Lord’s presence.[n]
13 The Israelites who remain[o] will not act deceitfully.
They will not lie,
and a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths.
Indeed, they will graze peacefully like sheep[p] and lie down;
no one will terrify them.”
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is by the law: “The one who does these things will live by them.”[a] 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart,[b] ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[c] (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or “Who will descend into the abyss?”[d] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”[e] (that is, the word of faith that we preach), 9 because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord[f] and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness[g] and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation.[h] 11 For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”[i] 12 For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.[j]
