Psalm 86

Lament and Petition

A prayer of David.

Listen, Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.(A)
Protect my life, for I am faithful.(B)
You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you.(C)
Be gracious to me, Lord,
for I call to you all day long.(D)
Bring joy to your servant’s life,
because I appeal to you, Lord.(E)

For you, Lord, are kind and ready to forgive,(F)
abounding in faithful love to all who call on you.(G)
Lord, hear my prayer;
listen to my cries for mercy.(H)
I call on you in the day of my distress,
for you will answer me.(I)

Lord, there is no one like you among the gods,
and there are no works like yours.(J)
All the nations you have made
will come and bow down before you, Lord,
and will honor your name.(K)
10 For you are great and perform wonders;
you alone are God.(L)

Ezekiel 29:3-7

Speak to him and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster[a](A) lying in the middle of his Nile,
who says, “My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.”
I will put hooks in your jaws(B)
and make the fish of your streams
cling to your scales.
I will haul you up
from the middle of your Nile,
and all the fish of your streams
will cling to your scales.
I will leave you in the desert,(C)
you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open ground
and will not be taken away
or gathered for burial.(D)
I have given you
to the wild creatures of the earth
and the birds of the sky as food.(E)

“‘Then all the inhabitants of Egypt
will know that I am the Lord,
for they[b] have been a staff made of reed
to the house of Israel.

When Israel grasped you by the hand,
you splintered,(F) tearing all their shoulders;
when they leaned on you,
you shattered and made all their hips unsteady.[c]

Luke 11:53-12:3

53 When he left there,[a] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(A) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(B) for him to trap him in something he said.[b](C)

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(D) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(E) “Be on your guard(F) against the leaven[c](G) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(H) There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(I) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(J) Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(K) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(L)
