Genesis 12:1-9

The Call of Abram

12 And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

Abram’s Journey

And Abram went out as Yahweh had told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old[a] when he went out from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his nephew,[b] and all their possessions that they had gathered, and all the persons that they had acquired in Haran, and they went out to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to the land of Canaan. And Abram traveled through the land up to the place of Shechem, to the Oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. And he moved on from there to the hill country, east of Bethel. And he pitched his tent at Bethel on the west, and at Ai on the east. And he built an altar there to Yahweh. And he called on the name of Yahweh. And Abram kept moving on,[c] toward the Negev.

Psalm 33:1-12

Praise to Yahweh for His Character and Creation

33 Exult in Yahweh, O you righteous,
for praise is fitting for the upright.
Give thanks to Yahweh with the lyre;
with a harp of ten strings play to him.
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully with jubilant shout.
For the word of Yahweh is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice.
The earth is full of the loyal love of Yahweh.
By the word of Yahweh the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
He gathered the waters of the sea like a heap.
He put the deeps in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear Yahweh.
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he himself spoke[a] and it came to pass.
He himself commanded[b] and it stood firm.
10 Yahweh brings to nothing[c] the plan of nations;
he frustrates[d] the intents of peoples.
11 The plan of Yahweh stands firm forever,
the intents of his heart from one generation to the next.[e]
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh,
the people he has chosen for his inheritance.

Romans 4:13-25

The Promise to Abraham Secured through Faith

13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants, that he would be heir of the world, was not through the law, but through the righteousness by faith. 14 For if those of the law are heirs, faith is rendered void and the promise is nullified. 15 For the law produces wrath, but where there is no law, neither is there transgression. 16 Because of this, it is by faith, in order that it may be according to grace, so that the promise may be secure to all the descendants, not only to those of the law, but also to those of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (just as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”)[a] before God, in whom he believed, the one who makes the dead alive and who calls the things that are not as though they are, 18 who against hope believed in hope, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was said, “so will your descendants be.”[b] 19 And not being weak in faith, he considered his own body as good as dead, [c] because he[d] was approximately a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 And he did not waver in unbelief at the promise of God, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God 21 and being fully convinced that what he had promised, he was also able to do. 22 Therefore[e] it was credited to him for righteousness. 23 But it was not written for the sake of him alone that it was credited to him, 24 but also for the sake of us to whom it is going to be credited, to those who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over on account of our trespasses, and was raised up in the interest of our justification.[f]

Matthew 9:9-13

Matthew Called to Follow Jesus

And as[a] Jesus was going away from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said to him, “Follow me!” And he stood up and[b] followed him.

10 And it happened as[c] he was dining[d] in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners were coming and[e] dining[f] with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when they[g] saw it,[h] the Pharisees began to say to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 And when he[i] heard it,[j] he said, “Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those who are sick.[k] 13 But go and[l] learn what it means, “I want mercy and not sacrifice.”[m] For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:18-26

A Woman Healed and a Daughter Raised

18 As[a] he was saying these things to them, behold, one of the rulers came and[b] knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter has just now died, but come, place your hand on her and she will live!” 19 And Jesus and his disciples got up and[c] followed him. 20 And behold, a woman who had been suffering with a hemorrhage twelve years approached from behind and[d] touched the edge[e] of his cloak, 21 for she said to herself, “If only I touch his cloak I will be healed.” 22 But Jesus, turning around and seeing her, said, “Have courage, daughter! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that hour.

23 And when[f] Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the disorderly crowd, 24 he said, “Go away, because the girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they ridiculed him. 25 But when the crowd had been sent out, he entered and[g] took her hand, and the girl got up. 26 And this report went out into that whole region.
