Psalm 2

Coronation of the Son

Why(A) do the nations rage(B)
and the peoples plot in vain?(C)
The kings of the earth take their stand,(D)
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[a](E)
“Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”(F)

The one enthroned[b] in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.(G)
Then he speaks to them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath:(H)
“I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”(I)

I will declare the Lord’s decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;[c]
today I have become your Father.(J)
Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance
and the ends of the earth your possession.(K)
You will break them with an iron scepter;
you will shatter them like pottery.”(L)

10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.(M)
12 Pay homage to[d] the Son or he will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,[e](N)
for his anger may ignite at any moment.(O)
All who take refuge in him are happy.(P)

1 Kings 21:20-29

20 Ahab said to Elijah, “So, my enemy, you’ve found me, have you?” (A)

He replied, “I have found you because you devoted(B) yourself to do what is evil in the Lord’s sight. 21 This is what the Lord says:[a] ‘I am about to bring disaster on you and will eradicate your descendants:

I will wipe out all of Ahab’s males,[b]
both slave and free,[c] in Israel;(C)

22 I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam(D) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(E) son of Ahijah, because you have angered me and caused Israel to sin.’(F) 23 The Lord also speaks of Jezebel: ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel in the plot of land[d] at Jezreel:(G)

24 Anyone who belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, the dogs will eat,
and anyone who dies in the field, the birds[e] will eat.’”(H)

25 Still, there was no one like Ahab, who devoted himself to do what was evil in the Lord’s sight, because his wife Jezebel incited him.(I) 26 He committed the most detestable acts by following idols(J) as the Amorites(K) had, whom the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.

27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put sackcloth over his body, and fasted. He lay down in sackcloth(L) and walked around subdued. 28 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29 “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? I will not bring the disaster during his lifetime,(M) because he has humbled himself before me. I will bring the disaster on his house during his son’s lifetime.”(N)

Mark 9:9-13

As(A) they were coming down the mountain,(B) he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen(C) until the Son of Man(D) had risen(E) from the dead.(F) 10 They kept this word(G) to themselves, questioning what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes(H) say that Elijah must come first?” (I)

12 “Elijah does come first and restores(J) all things,”(K) he replied. “Why then is it written(L) that the Son of Man must suffer(M) many things and be treated with contempt?(N) 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written(O) about him.”
