Psalm 112

Psalm 112

Praise the Lord!

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who delights greatly in His commandments.

His offspring shall be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
Wealth and riches shall be in his house,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
To the upright there arises light in the darkness;
    he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
A good man shows generous favor, and lends;
    he will guide his affairs with justice.

Surely the righteous man shall not be moved;
    the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
He shall not be afraid of evil tidings;
    his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is established; he shall not be afraid,
    until he sees triumph upon his enemies.
He has given away freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his horn shall be exalted with honor.

10 The wicked shall see it and be grieved;
    he shall gnash his teeth and melt away;
    the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Jeremiah 3:6-14

A Call to Repentance

The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot. I said after she had done all these things, “Turn to Me.” But she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. I saw that for all the adulteries of backsliding Israel, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. Through the lightness of her harlotry she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and with trees. 10 Yet for all this, her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me with her whole heart, but feignedly, says the Lord.

God Invites Repentance

11 The Lord said to me: Backsliding Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say:

Return, backsliding Israel, says the Lord,
    and I will not cause My anger to fall on you.
For I am merciful, says the Lord,
    and I will not keep anger forever.
13 Only acknowledge your iniquity,
    that you have transgressed against the Lord your God
and have scattered your ways to the strangers
    under every green tree,
    and you have not obeyed My voice,
    says the Lord.

14 Return, O backsliding sons, says the Lord. For I am married to you. And I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

Matthew 5:27-36

Teaching About Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. For it is profitable that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body be thrown into hell.

Teaching About Divorce(A)

31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’[b] 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.

Teaching About Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’[c] 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
