Psalm 119:9-16

ב (Bet)

How can a young person[a] maintain a pure life?[b]
By guarding it according to your instructions.[c]
10 With all my heart I seek you.
Do not allow me to stray from your commands.
11 In my heart I store up[d] your words,[e]
so I might not sin against you.
12 You deserve praise,[f] O Lord.
Teach me your statutes.
13 With my lips I proclaim
all the regulations you have revealed.[g]
14 I rejoice in the lifestyle prescribed by your rules[h]
as if[i] they were riches of all kinds.[j]
15 I will meditate on[k] your precepts
and focus on[l] your behavior.[m]
16 I find delight[n] in your statutes;
I do not forget your instructions.[o]

Haggai 2:1-9

The Glory to Come

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,[a] the Lord’s message came through[b] the prophet Haggai again: “Ask the following questions to[c] Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak,[d] and the remnant of the people: ‘Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple?[e] How does it look to you now? Isn’t it nothing by comparison?’ Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,” decrees the Lord. “Take heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And take heart all you citizens of the land,”[f] decrees the Lord, “and begin to work. For I am with you,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Do not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my Spirit[g] even now testifies to you.”[h] Moreover, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said: “In just a little while[i] I will once again shake the sky[j] and the earth, the sea and the dry ground. I will also shake up all the nations, and they[k] will offer their treasures;[l] then I will fill this temple with glory.” So the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said. “The silver and gold will be mine,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “The future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,”[m] the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared. “And in this place I will give peace,” decrees the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[n]

Haggai 2:20-23

Zerubbabel the Chosen One

20 Then the Lord spoke to Haggai[a] a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:[b] 21 “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah: ‘I am ready[c] to shake the sky[d] and the earth. 22 I will overthrow royal thrones and shatter the might of earthly kingdoms.[e] I will overthrow chariots and those who ride them, and horses and their riders will fall as people kill one another.[f] 23 On that day,’[g] says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant,’[h] says the Lord, ‘and I will make you like a signet ring,[i] for I have chosen you,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”[j]

John 12:34-50

34 Then the crowd responded,[a] “We have heard from the law that the Christ[b] will remain forever.[c] How[d] can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 Jesus replied,[e] “The light is with you for a little while longer.[f] Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you.[g] The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light.”[h] When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them.

The Outcome of Jesus’ Public Ministry Foretold

37 Although Jesus[i] had performed[j] so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him, 38 so that the word[k] of the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled. He said,[l]Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord[m] been revealed?[n] 39 For this reason they could not believe,[o] because again Isaiah said,

40 He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their heart,[p]
so that they would not see with their eyes
and understand with their heart,[q]
and turn to me,[r] and I would heal them.”[s]

41 Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ’s[t] glory, and spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, even among the rulers[u] many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees[v] they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ,[w] so that they would not be put out of[x] the synagogue.[y] 43 For they loved praise[z] from men more than praise[aa] from God.

Jesus’ Final Public Words

44 But Jesus shouted out,[ab] “The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,[ac] 45 and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.[ad] 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone[ae] hears my words and does not obey them,[af] I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.[ag] 48 The one who rejects me and does not accept[ah] my words has a judge;[ai] the word[aj] I have spoken will judge him at the last day. 49 For I have not spoken from my own authority,[ak] but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me[al] what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life.[am] Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me.”[an]
