Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 51[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[b]
51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[c] your loyal love.
Because of[d] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[e]
2 Wash away my wrongdoing.[f]
Cleanse me of my sin.[g]
3 For I am aware of[h] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[i]
4 Against you—you above all[j]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[k] you are just when you confront me;[l]
you are right when you condemn me.[m]
5 Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[n]
6 Look,[o] you desire[p] integrity in the inner man;[q]
you want me to possess wisdom.[r]
7 Cleanse me[s] with hyssop[t] and I will be pure;[u]
wash me[v] and I will be whiter than snow.[w]
8 Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[x]
May the bones[y] you crushed rejoice.[z]
9 Hide your face[aa] from my sins.
Wipe away[ab] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[ac]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[ad]
11 Do not reject me.[ae]
Do not take your holy Spirit[af] away from me.[ag]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[ah]
2 Lord, I have heard the report of what you did;[a]
I am awed,[b] Lord, by what you accomplished.[c]
In our time[d] repeat those deeds;[e]
in our time reveal them again.[f]
But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy![g]
3 God comes[h] from Teman,[i]
the Holy One[j] from Mount Paran.[k] Selah.[l]
His splendor has covered the skies,[m]
the earth is full of his glory.[n]
4 His brightness will be as lightning;[o]
a two-pronged lightning bolt flashing from his hand.[p]
This is the outward display of his power.[q]
5 Plague will go[r] before him;
pestilence[s] will march[t] right behind him.[u]
6 He took his battle position[v] and shook[w] the earth;
with a mere look he frightened[x] the nations.
The ancient mountains disintegrated;[y]
the primeval hills were flattened.
His are ancient roads.[z]
7 I saw the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble;[aa]
the tent curtains of the land of Midian were[ab] shaking.[ac]
8 Was[ad] the Lord mad at the rivers?
Were you angry with the rivers?
Were you enraged at the sea?[ae]
Such that[af] you would climb into your horse-drawn chariots,[ag]
your victorious chariots?[ah]
9 Your bow is ready for action;[ai]
you commission your arrows.[aj] Selah.
You cause flash floods on the earth’s surface.[ak]
10 When the mountains see you, they shake.
The torrential downpour sweeps through.[al]
The great deep[am] shouts out;
it lifts its hands high.[an]
11 The sun and moon stand still in their courses;[ao]
the flash of your arrows drives them away,[ap]
the bright light of your lightning-quick spear.[aq]
12 You furiously stomp on the earth;
you angrily trample down the nations.
13 You march out to deliver your people,
to deliver your special servant.[ar]
You strike the leader of the wicked nation,[as]
laying him open from the lower body to the neck.[at] Selah.
Jesus’ Anointing
12 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he[a] had raised from the dead. 2 So they prepared a dinner for Jesus[b] there. Martha[c] was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table[d] with him. 3 Then Mary took three quarters of a pound[e] of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard[f] and anointed the feet of Jesus. She[g] then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.)[h] 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him)[i] said, 5 “Why wasn’t this oil sold for 300 silver coins[j] and the money[k] given to the poor?” 6 (Now Judas[l] said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box,[m] he used to steal what was put into it.)[n] 7 So Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.[o] 8 For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!”[p]
9 Now a large crowd of Judeans[q] learned[r] that Jesus[s] was there, and so they came not only because of him[t] but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,[u] 11 for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem[v] were going away and believing in Jesus.
