Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Fiery Serpents
4 Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the road to the Red Sea,[a] to go around the land of Edom, but the people[b] became impatient along the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness, for there is no bread or water, and we[c] detest this worthless[d] food.”
6 So the Lord sent venomous[e] snakes[f] among the people, and they bit the people; many people of Israel died. 7 Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord that he would take away[g] the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous snake and set it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks[h] at it, he will live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole, so that if a snake had bitten someone, when he looked at the bronze snake he lived.[i]
17 They acted like fools in their rebellious ways,[a]
and suffered because of their sins.
18 They lost their appetite for all food,[b]
and they drew near the gates of death.
19 They cried out to the Lord in their distress;
he delivered them from their troubles.
20 He sent them an assuring word[c] and healed them;
he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped.[d]
21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his loyal love,
and for the amazing things he has done for people.[e]
22 Let them present thank offerings,
and loudly proclaim what he has done.[f]
New Life Individually
2 And although you were[a] dead[b] in your offenses and sins, 2 in which[c] you formerly lived[d] according to this world’s present path,[e] according to the ruler of the domain[f] of the air, the ruler of[g] the spirit[h] that is now energizing[i] the sons of disobedience,[j] 3 among whom[k] all of us[l] also[m] formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath[n] even as the rest…[o]
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, 5 even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved![p]— 6 and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 to demonstrate in the coming ages[q] the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward[r] us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you are saved[s] through faith,[t] and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from[u] works, so that no one can boast.[v] 10 For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.[w]
14 Just as[a] Moses lifted up the serpent[b] in the wilderness,[c] so must the Son of Man be lifted up,[d] 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”[e]
16 For this is the way[f] God loved the world: He gave his one and only[g] Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish[h] but have eternal life.[i] 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,[j] but that the world should be saved through him. 18 The one who believes in him is not condemned.[k] The one who does not believe has been condemned[l] already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only[m] Son of God. 19 Now this is the basis for judging:[n] that the light has come into the world and people[o] loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. 21 But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God.[p]
