Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Decalogue
20 [a] God spoke all these words:[b]
2 “I,[c] the Lord, am your God,[d] who brought you[e] from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.[f]
3 “You shall have no[g] other gods before me.[h]
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image[i] or any likeness[j] of anything[k] that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below.[l] 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them,[m] for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous[n] God, responding to[o] the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations[p] of those who reject me,[q] 6 and showing covenant faithfulness[r] to a thousand generations[s] of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You shall not take[t] the name of the Lord your God in vain,[u] for the Lord will not hold guiltless[v] anyone who takes his name in vain.
8 “Remember[w] the Sabbath[x] day to set it apart as holy.[y] 9 For six days[z] you may labor[aa] and do all your work,[ab] 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on it[ac] you shall not do any work, you,[ad] or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the resident foreigner who is in your gates.[ae] 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
12 “Honor[af] your father and your mother, that you may live a long time[ag] in the land[ah] the Lord your God is giving to you.
13 “You shall not murder.[ai]
14 “You shall not commit adultery.[aj]
15 “You shall not steal.[ak]
16 “You shall not give[al] false testimony[am] against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet[an] your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.”[ao]
Psalm 19[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
19 The heavens declare the glory of God;[b]
the sky displays his handiwork.[c]
2 Day after day it speaks out;[d]
night after night it reveals his greatness.[e]
3 There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its[f] voice literally heard.
4 Yet its voice[g] echoes[h] throughout the earth;
its[i] words carry[j] to the distant horizon.[k]
In the sky[l] he has pitched a tent for the sun.[m]
5 Like a bridegroom it emerges[n] from its chamber;[o]
like a strong man it enjoys[p] running its course.[q]
6 It emerges from the distant horizon,[r]
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;[s]
nothing can escape[t] its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[u]
The rules set down by the Lord[v] are reliable[w]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[x]
8 The Lord’s precepts are fair[y]
and make one joyful.[z]
The Lord’s commands[aa] are pure[ab]
and give insight for life.[ac]
9 The commands to fear the Lord are right[ad]
and endure forever.[ae]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[af]
10 They are of greater value[ag] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[ah] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[ai]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[aj]
12 Who can know all his errors?[ak]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[al]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[am]
do not allow such sins to control me.[an]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[ao] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[ap]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[aq] and my redeemer.[ar]
The Message of the Cross
18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.”[a] 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law?[b] Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 23 but we preach about a crucified Christ,[c] a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,[d] and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.[e]
13 Now the Jewish feast of Passover[a] was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 [b] He found in the temple courts[c] those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables.[d] 15 So he made a whip of cords[e] and drove them all out of the temple courts,[f] with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers[g] and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold the doves he said, “Take these things away from here! Do not make[h] my Father’s house a marketplace!”[i] 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal[j] for your house will devour me.”[k]
18 So then the Jewish leaders[l] responded,[m] “What sign can you show us, since you are doing these things?”[n] 19 Jesus replied,[o] “Destroy[p] this temple and in three days I will raise it up again.” 20 Then the Jewish leaders[q] said to him, “This temple has been under construction[r] for forty-six years,[s] and are you going to raise it up in three days?” 21 But Jesus[t] was speaking about the temple of his body.[u] 22 So after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture[v] and the saying[w] that Jesus had spoken.
