Psalm 27

A psalm of David.

27 The Lord is my light, and he saves me.
    Why should I fear anyone?
The Lord is my place of safety.
    Why should I be afraid?
My enemies are evil.
    They will trip and fall
when they attack me
and try to swallow me up.
Even if an army attacks me,
my heart will not be afraid.
Even if war breaks out against me,
I will still trust in God.

I’m asking the Lord for only one thing.
    Here is what I want.
I want to live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life.
I want to look at the beauty of the Lord.
I want to worship him in his temple.
When I’m in trouble,
he will keep me safe in his house.
He will hide me in the safety of his holy tent.
He will put me on a rock that is very high.
Then I will win the battle
over my enemies who are all around me.
At his holy tent I will offer my sacrifice with shouts of joy.
I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Lord, hear my voice when I call out to you.
Treat me with kindness and answer me.
My heart says, “Seek him!”
    Lord, I will seek you.
Don’t turn your face away from me.
Don’t turn me away because you are angry.
    You have helped me.
God my Savior, don’t say no to me.
    Don’t desert me.
10 My father and mother may desert me,
but the Lord will accept me.
11 Lord, teach me your ways.
Lead me along a straight path.
There are many people who treat me badly.
12 My enemies want to harm me. So don’t turn me over to them.
Witnesses who tell lies are rising up against me.
They say all sorts of evil things about me.

13 Here is something I am still sure of.
I will see the Lord’s goodness
    while I’m still alive.
14 Wait for the Lord.
Be strong and don’t lose hope.
    Wait for the Lord.

Isaiah 26:7-15

The path of godly people is level.
You are the God who does what is right.
    You make their way smooth.
Lord, we are living the way your laws command us to live.
We are waiting for you to act.
We want your honor and fame to be known.
My heart longs for you at night.
My spirit longs for you in the morning.
You will come and judge the earth.
Then the people of the world will learn to do what is right.
10 Sometimes grace is shown to sinful people.
But they still don’t learn to do what is right.
They keep on doing evil even in a land where others are honest and fair.
They don’t have any respect for the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, you have raised your hand high to punish them.
But they don’t even see it.
Let them see how much you love your people.
Then they will be put to shame.
Let the fire you are saving for your enemies burn them up.

12 Lord, you give us peace.
You are the one who has done everything we’ve accomplished.
13 Lord, you are our God.
Other masters besides you have ruled over us.
But your name is the only one we honor.
14 Those other masters are now dead.
    They will never live again.
Their spirits won’t rise from the dead.
You punished them and destroyed them.
You wiped out all memory of them.
15 Lord, you have made our nation grow.
    You have made it larger.
You have gained glory for yourself.
You have increased the size of our land.

Acts 2:37-42

37 When the people heard this, it had a deep effect on them. They said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

38 Peter replied, “All of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then your sins will be forgiven. You will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children. It is also for all who are far away. It is for all whom the Lord our God will choose.”

40 Peter said many other things to warn them. He begged them, “Save yourselves from these evil people.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized. About 3,000 people joined the believers that day.

The Believers Share Their Lives Together

42 The believers studied what the apostles taught. They shared their lives together. They ate and prayed together.
