Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 116[a]
Thanksgiving to God for Help Received
1 I love the Lord because he has heard my voice
and listened to my cry for mercy,[b]
2 because he has inclined his ear to me
on the day when I called out to him.[c]
3 The bonds of death[d] encompassed me;
the snares of the netherworld held me tightly.
I was seized by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I cried out in the name[e] of the Lord:
“O Lord, I entreat you to preserve my life.”
12 How can I repay the Lord
for all the good he has done for me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation[a]
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows[b] to the Lord
in the presence of his people.
15 Precious in the eyes of the Lord
is the death[c] of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant.
I am your servant, the child of your handmaid;[d]
you have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia.[e]
Chapter 25
1 O Lord, you are my God.
I will exalt you and praise your name,
for you have accomplished wonderful things,
formulated in ages past, faithful and sure.
2 You have made the city a heap of ruins,
the fortified city a mass of rubble.
The citadel of foreigners is a city no more,
and it will never be rebuilt.
3 Therefore, mighty peoples will honor you,
and the cities of ruthless nations
will regard you with awe.
4 For you have been a refuge for the poor,
a refuge to the needy in their distress,
a shelter from the storm
and a shade from the heat.
5 The blast of the ruthless
is like a winter storm or a scorching drought,
but you subdue the roar of the foe,
and the song of the ruthless fades away.
8 Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with a joy that is indescribable and glorious. 9 For you are achieving the goal of your faith, that is, the salvation of your souls.
10 This salvation was the subject of intense scrutiny and investigation by the Prophets[a] who spoke about the grace that you were to receive. 11 They were searching out the time and the circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ[b] within them was pointing when it testified in advance to the sufferings that Christ would endure and the glories that would then follow.
12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you when they spoke of the things that have now been announced to you through those who proclaimed the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels long to catch a glimpse of such things.
