Psalm 49

Misplaced Trust in Wealth

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who inhabit the world,(A)
both low and high,[a]
rich and poor together.(B)
My mouth speaks wisdom;
my heart’s meditation brings understanding.(C)
I turn my ear to a proverb;
I explain my riddle with a lyre.(D)

Why should I fear in times of trouble?
The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.(E)
They trust in their wealth
and boast of their abundant riches.(F)
Yet these cannot redeem a person[b]
or pay his ransom to God(G)
since the price of redeeming him is too costly,
one should forever stop trying[c](H)
so that he may live forever
and not see the Pit.(I)

10 For one can see that wise men die;
foolish and stupid men also pass away.(J)
Then they leave their wealth to others.(K)
11 Their graves are their eternal homes,[d]
their homes from generation to generation,
though they have named estates after themselves.(L)
12 But despite his assets,[e] man will not last;
he is like the animals that perish.(M)

Proverbs 24:1-12

24 Don’t envy evil men(A)
or desire to be with them,(B)
for their hearts plan violence,
and their words stir up trouble.(C)

A house is built by wisdom,(D)
and it is established by understanding;
by knowledge the rooms are filled
with every precious and beautiful treasure.

A wise warrior is better than a strong one,[a]
and a man of knowledge than one of strength;[b](E)
for you should wage war with sound guidance—
victory comes with many counselors.(F)

Wisdom is inaccessible to[c] a fool;(G)
he does not open his mouth at the gate.(H)

The one who plots evil(I)
will be called a schemer.
A foolish scheme is sin,
and a mocker is detestable to people.

10 If you do nothing in a difficult time,
your strength is limited.
11 Rescue those being taken off to death,
and save those stumbling toward slaughter.(J)
12 If you say, “But we didn’t know about this,”
won’t He who weighs hearts(K) consider it?
Won’t He who protects your life(L) know?
Won’t He repay a person according to his work?(M)

Ephesians 4:17-24

Living the New Life

17 Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their thoughts. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts. 19 They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity(A) with a desire for more and more.[a]

20 But that is not how you learned about the Messiah, 21 assuming you heard about Him and were taught by Him, because the truth(B) is in Jesus. 22 You took off[b](C) your former way of life,(D) the old self[c](E) that is corrupted by deceitful desires; 23 you are being renewed[d] in the spirit(F) of your minds; 24 you put on[e](G) the new self, the one created(H) according to God’s likeness(I) in righteousness and purity of the truth.
