Version
Psalm 49:1-12

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

Riches cannot save you

49 Listen to this, people from every nation.
Yes, listen carefully,
everyone who lives in this world!
All people must listen, whoever you are,
whether you are rich people or poor people.
I will speak wise words to you.
When you know my thoughts,
    you will understand things better.
I have studied proverbs.
I explain what they mean
as I make music on my harp.
When trouble comes,
    why am I afraid?
When cruel people are all round me,
and they want to hurt me,
    why am I afraid?
Those people think that their money will keep them safe.
They are proud about their riches.
Nobody can pay the price to save another person.
Nobody can pay God the price for their life.
A human life costs too much to buy it back.
    Nobody could ever pay enough.
So nobody can live for ever.
Everyone goes to their grave one day.
10 Surely you see that even wise people die,
in the way that fools and stupid people also die.
Then their money will belong to someone else.
11 Their graves will be their homes for ever.
They had their own land,
which was called by their name,
12 but people do not live for ever,
even if they are very rich.
They will die, just like the animals.

Proverbs 23:1-11

More wise thoughts

23 6. When you sit down to eat a meal with a ruler, be careful how you eat. Even if you enjoy your food, do not eat too much of it. Do not want his special food for yourself. He may be trying to deceive you.

7. Do not work so hard to become rich that you make yourself ill. Be wise and rest when you need to. Your money can disappear very quickly. It may seem to grow wings and then fly far away like an eagle.

8. Do not go and eat a meal with someone who hates to spend his money. His food may be good, but do not be greedy for it.

He says, ‘Eat and drink as much as you want,’ but he does not really mean that. He is thinking about the cost of the food.

Even if you only eat a little of his food, it will make you sick. All your nice words to him will be useless.

9. Do not speak to foolish people. They will think that your wise words are silly.

10 10. Never move a stone that has always shown the border of someone's land. Do not take for yourself the fields of people who have no family to help them. 11 God himself will be the relative who helps them. He will speak against you in court.

Romans 11:33-36

33 Yes! God is very great! He has everything! He knows and he understands all things! Nobody can completely understand the things that he decides. Nobody can explain the ways in which he works. 34 The Bible says this:

‘Nobody knows the thoughts of the Lord God.
Nobody is able to tell him what he should do.’[a]
35 ‘Nobody has ever given anything to God,
so that God had a debt to pay back to them.’[b]

36 It is God who made all things. He also causes all things to continue. And all things are there to show how great he is.

We praise him! He is great for ever! Amen. This is true!
