Psalm 64

Psalm 64[a]

Thanksgiving for Recovery from Illness

For the director.[b] A psalm of David.

Listen, O God, to my cry of lament;
from the dreaded enemy preserve my life.
Protect me from the council of the wicked,
from the band of those who do evil.
They sharpen their tongues[c] like swords,
and they shoot forth their venomous words like arrows,
while they attack the innocent from ambush,
    shooting suddenly and without fear.
[d]They agree on their evil plan,
and they resolve to lay snares,
    saying, “Who will see us?”
They plot evil schemes
    and devise shrewd plots;
the thoughts of their hearts[e] are hidden.
[f]However, God will shoot his arrows at them,[g]
and they will suddenly be struck down.
Their own tongues will bring them down,
and all who see them will wag their heads.[h]
10 [i]Then everyone will be in awe,
as they proclaim God’s mighty deeds
and contemplate what he has done.[j]
11 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord
    and take refuge in him;
all the upright in heart will praise him.

Ezekiel 32:1-10

Chapter 32

Lamentation over Pharaoh.[a] In the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month, this word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, raise a lament for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt:

Lion of the nations, your end has come.
You are like a monster in the seas,
    thrashing about in your streams,
churning up the water with your feet
    and fouling the streams.

Thus says the Lord God:

When many nations are assembled,
I will throw my net over you
and haul you up in my seine.
I will throw you on the ground
and fling you onto an open field.
I will let all the birds of the air settle on you,
and I will urge all the beasts of the earth
to eat their fill of you.
I will strew your flesh on the mountains
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
I will drench the land with your flowing blood
all the way to the mountains,
and the riverbeds will be filled with your blood.
[b]When I blot you out,
    I will cover the heavens,
and all their stars I will darken.
I will cover the sun with clouds,
and the moon shall not give its light.
All the shining lights in the heavens
I will dim because of you,
and I will spread darkness over your land,
    says the Lord God.
I will grieve the hearts of many peoples
when I lead you as captives among the nations,
    into countries unknown to you.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder in horror at your fate
when I brandish my sword in their presence.
On the day of your downfall,
each one will tremble for his life.

Luke 9:37-43

End of the Galilean Ministry

37 Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon.[a] On the following day, when they descended from the mountain, a large crowd came forth to meet him. 38 Then, suddenly, a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I implore you to look at my son. He is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and with a shriek suddenly throws him into convulsions until he begins to foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him, continuously torturing him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”

41 Jesus said in reply, “O unbelieving and perverse generation! How much longer shall I remain with you and have to endure you? Bring your son here!” 42 As the boy was approaching him, the demon threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all those present were awestruck at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Passion a Second Time.[b] Amid the astonishment of the crowds at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples,
