Psalm 64

A Prayer Against Enemies

For the director of music. A song of David.

64 God, listen to my complaint.
I am afraid of my enemies.
    Protect my life from them.
Hide me from those wicked people,
from that gang who does evil.
They sharpen their tongues like swords.
They shoot bitter words like arrows.
They hide and shoot at innocent people.
They shoot suddenly and are not afraid.
They encourage each other to do wrong.
    They talk about setting traps.
They think no one will see them.
They plan wicked things and say,
    “We have a perfect plan.”
The mind of man is hard to understand.

But God will shoot them with arrows.
They will suddenly be struck down.
Their own words will be used against them.
All who see them will shake their heads.
Then everyone will fear God.
They will tell what God has done.
They will learn from what he has done.
10 Good people will be happy in the Lord.
They will find protection in him.
Let everyone who is honest praise the Lord.

Job 18

Bildad Answers Job

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:

“When will you stop these speeches?
Be sensible, and then we can talk.
You think of us as only cattle.
    You think we are stupid.
You tear yourself to pieces in your anger.
Does everyone have to leave the earth just for you?
Do the rocks have to be moved from their place for you?

“The lamp of the wicked person will be put out.
The flame in his lamp will stop burning.
The light in his tent will become dark.
The lamp by his side will go out.
His footsteps will become weak and lose their strength.
He will fall into his own evil trap.
His feet are caught in a net
when he walks into its web.
A trap will catch him by the heel.
And it will hold him tight.
10 A trap for him is hidden on the ground.
    It lies in his path.
11 Terrible things startle him from every side.
They chase him at every step.
12 Hunger takes away his strength.
    Disaster is at his side.
13 Disease eats away parts of his skin.
The signs of death begin to eat away at his arms and legs.
14 The evil person is torn from the safety of his tent.
He is dragged off to Death, the King of Terrors.
15 His tent is set on fire.
Burning sulfur is scattered over his home.
16 His roots dry up below ground,
and his branches above ground die.
17 People on earth will not remember him.
His name will be forgotten in the land.
18 He will be driven from the light into darkness.
He will be chased out of the world.
19 He has no children or descendants among his people.
No one will be left alive where he once lived.
20 People of the west are shocked at what has happened to him.
People of the east are very frightened.
21 This is surely what will happen to the home of an evil person.
This is the place of one who does not know God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

Christ Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 The teaching about the cross seems foolish to those who are lost. But to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 It is written in the Scriptures:

“I will cause the wise men to lose their wisdom.
I will make the wise men unable to understand.” Isaiah 29:14

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the educated person? Where is the philosopher[a] of our times? God has made the wisdom of the world foolish. 21 The world did not know God through its own wisdom. So God chose to use the message that sounds foolish to save those who believe it. 22 The Jews ask for miracles as proofs. The Greeks want wisdom. 23 But we preach Christ on the cross. This is a big problem to the Jews. And it seems foolish to the non-Jews. 24 But Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God to those people God has called—Jews and Greeks. 25 Even the foolishness of God is wiser than men. Even the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 Brothers, look at what you were when God called you. Not many of you were wise in the way the world judges wisdom. Not many of you had great influence. Not many of you came from important families. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 And he chose what the world thinks is not important. He chose what the world hates and thinks is nothing. He chose these to destroy what the world thinks is important. 29 God did this so that no man can brag before him. 30 It is God who has made you part of Christ Jesus. Christ has become wisdom for us from God. Christ is the reason we are right with God and have freedom from sin; Christ is the reason we are holy. 31 So, as the Scripture says, “If a person brags, he should brag only about the Lord.”[b]
