Psalm 48

Psalm 48[a]

Thanksgiving for the Deliverance of God’s People

A psalm of the sons of Korah.[b] A song.

Great is the Lord and worthy of high praise
    in the city of our God.
His holy mountain,[c] towering in its beauty,
    is the joy of the entire earth.
Mount Zion, the true heights of the north,[d]
    is the city of the great King.
God is in her citadels
    and has revealed himself as her fortress.[e]
[f]For the kings conspired together
    and came onward in unison.
As soon as they beheld her, they were astounded;
    filled with panic, they fled.
They were seized with trembling,
    with pains like those of a woman in labor,
as though a wind from the east[g]
    were breaking up the ships of Tarshish.
What we had heard,
    we have now beheld for ourselves[h]
    in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God
    that he established to endure forever. Selah
10 O God, as we stand in the midst of your temple,
    we will meditate on your kindness.[i]
11 Like your name,[j] O God,
    your praise extends to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is filled with righteousness;
12     let Mount Zion rejoice.
Let the towns of Judah exult
    in your saving judgments.[k]
13 [l]Walk around Zion; pass throughout her;
    count the number of her towers.
14 Take careful note of her ramparts,
    walk through her citadels,
so that you may recount for future generations
15     that such is God;
our God forever and ever,
    he will be our guide eternally.[m]

Joel 2:18-27

18 Thereupon, the Lord was stirred to feel concern for his land, and he took pity on his people. 19 In response to their request, the Lord said to his people:

I will send you
    grain and wine and oil,
    and you will have all you need.
Never again will I expose you
    to the contempt of the nations.
20 I shall drive the northern army far from you
    and banish them to an arid and desolate land,
with their vanguard toward the eastern sea,[a]
    and their rearguard toward the western sea.
They will give off a stench,
    and a foul stench will rise up.
21 Fear not, O land;
    be glad and rejoice,
    for the Lord has done great things.
22 Be not afraid, you beasts of the field,
    for the open pastures are green once again.
The trees will bear fruit;
    the fig tree and the vine will yield a full harvest.
23 O children of Zion, be glad,
    and rejoice in the Lord, your God.
For he has given you food in good measure
    by sending you rain,
    the autumn and spring rains as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
    and the vats will overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will repay you for the years
    that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopping, the destroying, and the cutting locust,
    my great army which I sent against you.
26 You will eat until you are satisfied,
    and you will praise the name of the Lord, your God,
for he has dealt wondrously with you,
    and my people will never again be put to shame.
27 And you shall know
    that I am in the midst of Israel.
I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other;
    my people shall never again be put to shame.

1 Corinthians 2:1-11

Chapter 2

Jesus Christ—and Him Crucified. When I came to you, brethren, I did not proclaim to you the mystery of God[a] with words of eloquence or wisdom. For I resolved that, while I was with you, I would know nothing except Jesus Christ—and him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in great trepidation. My message and my proclamation were not made with persuasive words of wisdom, but in a demonstration of the Spirit and of power,[b] so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

The Mysterious Wisdom of God

The Plan of God, True Wisdom. However, to those who are mature, we do speak of wisdom, although not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age[c] whose end is not far distant. Rather, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age comprehended it. If they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.[d] For as it is written,

“Eye has not seen, ear has not heard,
    nor has the human heart imagined
    what God has prepared for those who love him.”

10 The Spirit Enables Faith To Mature. However, God has revealed these things to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit explores everything, even the depths of God. 11 And just as no human being comprehends any person’s innermost being except the person’s own spirit within him, so also no one comprehends what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.
