Psalm 18:1-3

Psalm 18[a]

Thanksgiving for God’s Help

For the director.[b] Of David, the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song after the Lord had rescued him from the clutches of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

I love you, O Lord, my strength,
    Lord, my rock,[c] my fortress, my deliverer.
My God is my rock in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation,
    my stronghold.

Psalm 18:20-32

20 He led me forth into the open field;
    he set me free because he was pleased with me.
21 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;[a]
    because my hands were pure, he has rewarded me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord[b]
    and refused to turn away from my God.
23 His laws are clearly known to me,
    and I have not failed to observe his decrees.
24 I was blameless in his sight,
    and I kept myself free of sin.
25 Therefore, the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    because of the cleanness of my hands in his eyes.
26 To the loyal, you show yourself to be loyal;
    to the blameless, you show yourself to be blameless;
27 to the pure, you show yourself to be pure;
    but to the perverse,[c] you show yourself to be shrewd.
28 For you save the humble,
    but you bring down the haughty.
29 You, O Lord, are light for my lamp;[d]
    O my God, you make my darkness turn to light.
30 With your help I can storm a rampart;
    with my God to aid me, I can scale any wall.
31 The way of God is blameless,
    and the Lord’s promise proves true;
he is a shield to all
    who flee to him for safety.
32 Indeed, who is God except the Lord?
    Who is the Rock besides our God?

Deuteronomy 32:18-20

18 You deserted the rock who formed you;
    you forgot God, who fathered you.
19 When the Lord saw it, he despised them;
    his sons and his daughters frustrated him.
20 He said, “I will hide my face from them
    and watch to see how they end,
for they are a perverse generation,
    children who are unfaithful.

Deuteronomy 32:28-39

28 They are a nation without sense,
    there is no understanding in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this,
    and consider how they will end.
30 How could one man put a thousand to flight,
    or two drive away ten thousand,
unless the rock had delivered them,
    and the Lord given them up?
31 For their rock is not like our rock,
    even our enemies would judge it so.
32 Their vine comes from the vine stock of Sodom,[a]
    and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,
    their clusters with bitterness.
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
    the cruel venom of cobras.
34 Is this not stored away with me,
    sealed up in my treasury?
35 Vengeance is mine, and recompense.
    Their foot will slip in due time,
for the day of destruction is at hand,
    and their doom hastens upon them.
36 The Lord will judge his people,
    he will have compassion on his servants
when he sees that their power is spent
    and there are none who remain, slave or free.
37 He will say, “Where are their gods,
    the rock in whom they trusted?
38 Who ate the fat of their offerings,
    and drank their wine libations?
Let them arise and help you
    and be your protection.
39 See now that I, I am he,
    there is no other god besides me.
It is I who put to death and give life,
    it is I who wound and heal.
No one can deliver you from out of my hand.

Romans 11:33-36

33 The Judgments of God Are Unfathomable.[a] Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unfathomable his ways!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,
    or who has been his counselor?[b]
35 Or who has given him anything
    in order to receive something in return?”[c]

36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
