Isaiah 7:10-16

10 The Lord again spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask for a confirming sign from the Lord your God. You can even ask for something miraculous.”[a] 12 But Ahaz responded, “I don’t want to ask; I don’t want to put the Lord to a test.”[b] 13 So Isaiah replied,[c] “Pay attention,[d] family[e] of David.[f] Do you consider it too insignificant to try the patience of men? Is that why you are also trying the patience of my God? 14 For this reason the Lord himself will give you a confirming sign.[g] Look, this[h] young woman[i] is about to conceive[j] and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him[k] Immanuel.[l] 15 He will eat sour milk[m] and honey, which will help him know how[n] to reject evil and choose what is right. 16 Here is why this will be so:[o] Before the child knows how to reject evil and choose what is right, the land[p] whose two kings you fear will be desolate.[q]

Psalm 80:1-7

Psalm 80[a]

For the music director, according to the shushan-eduth style;[b] a psalm of Asaph.

80 O Shepherd of Israel, pay attention,
you who lead Joseph like a flock of sheep.
You who sit enthroned above the cherubim,[c] reveal your splendor.[d]
In the sight of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh reveal[e] your power.
Come and deliver us.[f]
O God, restore us.
Smile on us.[g] Then we will be delivered.[h]
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[i]
how long will you remain angry at your people while they pray to you?[j]
You have given them tears as food;[k]
you have made them drink tears by the measure.[l]
You have made our neighbors dislike us,[m]
and our enemies insult us.
O God of Heaven’s Armies,[n] restore us.
Smile on us.[o] Then we will be delivered.[p]

Psalm 80:17-19

17 May you give support to the one you have chosen,[a]
to the one whom you raised up for yourself.[b]
18 Then we will not turn away from you.
Revive us and we will pray to you.[c]
19 O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[d] restore us.
Smile on us.[e] Then we will be delivered.[f]

Romans 1:1-7

Salutation

From Paul,[a] a slave[b] of Christ Jesus,[c] called to be an apostle,[d] set apart for the gospel of God.[e] This gospel[f] he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, concerning his Son who was a descendant[g] of David with reference to the flesh,[h] who was appointed the Son-of-God-in-power[i] according to the Holy Spirit[j] by the resurrection[k] from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him[l] we have received grace and our apostleship[m] to bring about the obedience[n] of faith[o] among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name. You also are among them,[p] called to belong to Jesus Christ.[q] To all those loved by God in Rome, called to be saints:[r] Grace and peace to you[s] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Matthew 1:18-25

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together,[a] she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph, her husband to be,[b] was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her[c] privately. 20 When he had contemplated this, an[d] angel of the Lord[e] appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son and you will name him[f] Jesus,[g] because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23 Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will name him[h] Emmanuel,”[i] which means[j]God with us.”[k] 24 When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord[l] told him. He took his wife, 25 but did not have marital relations[m] with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named[n] Jesus.
