Version
Genesis 32:22-31

22 During the night Jacob quickly took[a] his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons[b] and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.[c] 23 He took them and sent them across the stream along with all his possessions.[d] 24 So Jacob was left alone. Then a man[e] wrestled[f] with him until daybreak.[g] 25 When the man[h] saw that he could not defeat Jacob,[i] he struck[j] the socket of his hip so the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him.

26 Then the man[k] said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.”[l] “I will not let you go,” Jacob replied,[m] “unless you bless me.”[n] 27 The man asked him,[o] “What is your name?”[p] He answered, “Jacob.” 28 “No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him,[q] “but Israel,[r] because you have fought[s] with God and with men and have prevailed.”

29 Then Jacob asked, “Please tell me your name.”[t] “Why[u] do you ask my name?” the man replied.[v] Then he blessed[w] Jacob[x] there. 30 So Jacob named the place Peniel,[y] explaining,[z] “Certainly[aa] I have seen God face to face[ab] and have survived.”[ac]

31 The sun rose[ad] over him as he crossed over Penuel,[ae] but[af] he was limping because of his hip.

Psalm 121

Psalm 121[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

121 I look up[c] toward the hills.
From where[d] does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,[e]
the Creator[f] of heaven and earth.
May he not allow your foot to slip.
May your Protector[g] not sleep.[h]
Look! Israel’s Protector[i]
does not sleep or slumber.
The Lord is your protector;
the Lord is the shade at your right hand.
The sun will not harm you by day,
or the moon by night.[j]
The Lord will protect you from all harm;
he will protect your life.
The Lord will protect you in all you do,[k]
now and forevermore.

2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

14 You, however, must continue[a] in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know[b] who taught you[c] 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 Every scripture[d] is inspired by God[e] and useful for teaching, for reproof,[f] for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the person dedicated to God[g] may be capable[h] and equipped for every good work.

Charge to Timothy Repeated

I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: Preach the message,[i] be ready[j] whether it is convenient or not,[k] reprove, rebuke, exhort[l] with complete patience and instruction. For there will be a time when people[m] will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires,[n] they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.[o] And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths.[p] You, however, be self-controlled[q] in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist’s work, fulfill your ministry.

Luke 18:1-8

Prayer and the Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then[a] Jesus[b] told them a parable to show them they should always[c] pray and not lose heart.[d] He said,[e] “In a certain city[f] there was a judge[g] who neither feared God nor respected people.[h] There was also a widow[i] in that city[j] who kept coming[k] to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For[l] a while he refused, but later on[m] he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor have regard for people,[n] yet because this widow keeps on bothering me, I will give her justice, or in the end she will wear me out[o] by her unending pleas.’”[p] And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unrighteous judge says![q] Won’t[r] God give justice to his chosen ones, who cry out[s] to him day and night?[t] Will he delay[u] long to help them? I tell you, he will give them justice speedily.[v] Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith[w] on earth?”
