Psalm 106(A)
2 Who can proclaim the mighty acts(E) of the Lord
or fully declare his praise?
3 Blessed are those who act justly,(F)
who always do what is right.(G)
13 But they soon forgot(A) what he had done
and did not wait for his plan to unfold.(B)
14 In the desert(C) they gave in to their craving;
in the wilderness(D) they put God to the test.(E)
15 So he gave them(F) what they asked for,
but sent a wasting disease(G) among them.
16 In the camp they grew envious(H) of Moses
and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.
17 The earth opened(I) up and swallowed Dathan;(J)
it buried the company of Abiram.(K)
18 Fire blazed(L) among their followers;
a flame consumed the wicked.
19 At Horeb they made a calf(M)
and worshiped an idol cast from metal.
20 They exchanged their glorious God(N)
for an image of a bull, which eats grass.
21 They forgot the God(O) who saved them,
who had done great things(P) in Egypt,
22 miracles in the land of Ham(Q)
and awesome deeds(R) by the Red Sea.
23 So he said he would destroy(S) them—
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach(T) before him
to keep his wrath from destroying them.
21 The Lord was angry with me(A) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land;(B) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.(C) 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant(D) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol(E) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,(F) a jealous God.(G)
25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt(H) and make any kind of idol,(I) doing evil(J) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses(K) against you(L) this day that you will quickly perish(M) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter(N) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive(O) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods(P) of wood and stone,(Q) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.(R) 29 But if from there you seek(S) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart(T) and with all your soul.(U) 30 When you are in distress(V) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days(W) you will return(X) to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful(Y) God; he will not abandon(Z) or destroy(AA) you or forget(AB) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.
The Lord Is God
32 Ask(AC) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;(AD) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.(AE) Has anything so great(AF) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?(AG) 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,(AH) by testings,(AI) by signs(AJ) and wonders,(AK) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(AL) or by great and awesome deeds,(AM) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.(AN) 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice(AO) to discipline(AP) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved(AQ) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,(AR) 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,(AS) as it is today.
39 Acknowledge(AT) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.(AU) 40 Keep(AV) his decrees and commands,(AW) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well(AX) with you and your children after you and that you may live long(AY) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[a] your own traditions!(A) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[b](B) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[c](C) 11 But you say(D) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(E) by your tradition(F) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [d]
17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(G) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(H) clean.)(I)
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(J) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
