Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch
26 Then an angel of the Lord[a] said to Philip,[b] “Get up and go south[c] on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert[d] road.)[e] 27 So[f] he got up[g] and went. There[h] he met[i] an Ethiopian eunuch,[j] a court official of Candace,[k] queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasury. He[l] had come to Jerusalem to worship,[m] 28 and was returning home, sitting[n] in his chariot, reading[o] the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran up[p] to it[q] and heard the man[r] reading the prophet Isaiah. He[s] asked him,[t] “Do you understand what you’re reading?” 31 The man[u] replied, “How in the world can I,[v] unless someone guides me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of scripture the man[w] was reading was this:
“He was led like a sheep to slaughter,
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did[x] not open his mouth.
33 In humiliation[y] justice was taken from him.[z]
Who can describe his posterity?[aa]
For his life was taken away[ab] from the earth.”[ac]
34 Then the eunuch said[ad] to Philip, “Please tell me,[ae] who is the prophet saying this about—himself or someone else?”[af] 35 So Philip started speaking,[ag] and beginning with this scripture[ah] proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him. 36 Now as they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, there is water! What is to stop me[ai] from being baptized?”[aj] 38 So he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water,[ak] and Philip baptized[al] him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him any more, but[am] went on his way rejoicing.[an] 40 Philip, however, found himself[ao] at Azotus,[ap] and as he passed through the area,[aq] he proclaimed the good news[ar] to all the towns[as] until he came to Caesarea.[at]
25 You are the reason I offer praise[a] in the great assembly;
I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.[b]
26 Let the oppressed eat and be filled.[c]
Let those who seek his help praise the Lord.
May you[d] live forever!
27 Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him.[e]
Let all the nations[f] worship you.[g]
28 For the Lord is king[h]
and rules over the nations.
29 All the thriving people[i] of the earth will join the celebration and worship;[j]
all those who are descending into the grave[k] will bow before him,
including those who cannot preserve their lives.[l]
30 A whole generation[m] will serve him;
they will tell the next generation about the Lord.[n]
31 They will come and tell about his saving deeds;[o]
they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished.[p]
God is Love
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because[a] love is from God, and everyone who loves[b] has been fathered[c] by God and knows God. 8 The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.[d] 9 By this[e] the love of God[f] is revealed in us:[g] that God has sent his one and only[h] Son into the world so that we may live through him. 10 In this[i] is love: not that[j] we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[k] for our sins.
11 Dear friends, if God so loved us, then[l] we also ought to love one another.[m] 12 No one has seen God at any time.[n] If we love one another, God resides[o] in us, and his love is perfected in us.[p] 13 By this[q] we know that we reside in God[r] and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit.[s] 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior[t] of the world.
15 If anyone[u] confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides[v] in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe[w] the love that God has in us.[x] God is love, and the one who resides[y] in love resides in God, and God resides in him. 17 By this[z] love is perfected with[aa] us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus[ab] is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.[ac] The[ad] one who fears punishment[ae] has not been perfected in love. 19 We love[af] because he loved us first.
20 If anyone says[ag] “I love God” and yet[ah] hates his fellow Christian,[ai] he is a liar, because the one who does not love his fellow Christian[aj] whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[ak] 21 And the commandment we have from him is this: that[al] the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian[am] too.
The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am the true vine[a] and my Father is the gardener.[b] 2 He takes away[c] every branch that does not bear[d] fruit in me. He[e] prunes[f] every branch that bears[g] fruit so that it will bear more fruit. 3 You are clean already[h] because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Remain[i] in me, and I will remain in you.[j] Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself,[k] unless it remains[l] in[m] the vine, so neither can you unless you remain[n] in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains[o] in me—and I in him—bears[p] much fruit,[q] because apart from me you can accomplish[r] nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain[s] in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire,[t] and are burned up.[u] 7 If you remain[v] in me and my words remain[w] in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.[x] 8 My Father is honored[y] by this, that[z] you bear[aa] much fruit and show that you are[ab] my disciples.
