Psalm 19

Psalm 19[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God;[b]
the sky displays his handiwork.[c]
Day after day it speaks out;[d]
night after night it reveals his greatness.[e]
There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its[f] voice literally heard.
Yet its voice[g] echoes[h] throughout the earth;
its[i] words carry[j] to the distant horizon.[k]
In the sky[l] he has pitched a tent for the sun.[m]
Like a bridegroom it emerges[n] from its chamber;[o]
like a strong man it enjoys[p] running its course.[q]
It emerges from the distant horizon,[r]
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;[s]
nothing can escape[t] its heat.
The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[u]
The rules set down by the Lord[v] are reliable[w]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[x]
The Lord’s precepts are fair[y]
and make one joyful.[z]
The Lord’s commands[aa] are pure[ab]
and give insight for life.[ac]
The commands to fear the Lord are right[ad]
and endure forever.[ae]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[af]
10 They are of greater value[ag] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[ah] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[ai]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[aj]
12 Who can know all his errors?[ak]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[al]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[am]
do not allow such sins to control me.[an]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[ao] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[ap]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[aq] and my redeemer.[ar]

Exodus 19:9-15

The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come[a] to you in a dense cloud,[b] so that the people may hear when I speak with you and so that they will always believe in you.”[c] And Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10 The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and sanctify them[d] today and tomorrow, and make them wash[e] their clothes 11 and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You must set boundaries[f] for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed[g] to yourselves not to go up on the mountain nor touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death! 13 No hand will touch him[h]—but he will surely be stoned or shot through, whether a beast or a human being;[i] he must not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast they may[j] go up on the mountain.”

14 Then Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day. Do not approach your wives for marital relations.”[k]

Acts 7:30-40

30 “After[a] forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert[b] of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush.[c] 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and when he approached to investigate, there came the voice of the Lord, 32 I am the God of your forefathers,[d] the God of Abraham, Isaac,[e] and Jacob.’[f] Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely.[g] 33 But the Lord said to him,Take the sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.[h] 34 I have certainly seen the suffering[i] of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them.[j] Now[k] come, I will send you to Egypt.’[l] 35 This same[m] Moses they had rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge?[n] God sent as both ruler and deliverer[o] through the hand of the angel[p] who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs[q] in the land of Egypt,[r] at[s] the Red Sea, and in the wilderness[t] for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,[u]God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’[v] 38 This is the man who was in the congregation[w] in the wilderness[x] with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors,[y] and he[z] received living oracles[aa] to give to you.[ab] 39 Our[ac] ancestors[ad] were unwilling to obey[ae] him, but pushed him aside[af] and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt[ag] —we do not know what has happened to him![ah]
