Great Are the Lord's Works
111 [a] (A)Praise the Lord!
I (B)will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of (C)the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the (D)works of the Lord,
(E)studied by all who delight in them.
3 (F)Full of splendour and majesty is his work,
and his (G)righteousness endures for ever.
4 He has (H)caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he (I)remembers his covenant for ever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are (J)trustworthy;
8 they are (K)established for ever and ever,
to be performed with (L)faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent (M)redemption to his people;
he has (N)commanded his covenant for ever.
(O)Holy and awesome is his name!
10 (P)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practise it have (Q)a good understanding.
His (R)praise endures for ever!
Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land
23 “And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant (A)your greatness and your mighty hand. For (B)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? 25 Please let me go over and see (C)the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and (D)Lebanon.’ 26 But (E)the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, (F)‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. 27 (G)Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westwards and northwards and southwards and eastwards, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan. 28 But (H)charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.’ 29 So we remained in (I)the valley opposite Beth-peor.
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham (A)because they are his offspring, but (B)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but (C)the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9 For this is what the promise said: (D)“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but (E)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of (F)him who calls— 12 she was told, (G)“The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, (H)“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
14 What shall we say then? (I)Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, (J)“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[a] but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, (K)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
