Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 23[a]
A psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,[b]
I lack nothing.[c]
2 He takes me to lush pastures,[d]
he leads me to refreshing water.[e]
3 He restores my strength.[f]
He leads me down[g] the right paths[h]
for the sake of his reputation.[i]
4 Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[j]
I fear[k] no danger,[l]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[m]
5 You prepare a feast before me[n]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[o] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[p]
6 Surely your goodness and faithfulness[q] will pursue[r] me all my days,[s]
and I will live in[t] the Lord’s house[u] for the rest of my life.[v]
8 They[a] removed the defenses[b] of Judah.
At that time[c] you looked
for the weapons in the House of the Forest.[d]
9 You saw the many breaks
in the walls of the City of David;[e]
you stored up water in the lower pool.
10 You counted the houses in Jerusalem,
and demolished houses so you could have material to reinforce the wall.[f]
11 You made a reservoir between the two walls
for the water of the old pool—
but you did not trust in[g] the one who made it;[h]
you did not depend on[i] the one who formed it long ago.
12 At that time the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies called for weeping and mourning,
for shaved heads and sackcloth.[j]
13 But look, there is outright celebration![k]
You say, “Kill the ox and slaughter the sheep,
eat meat and drink wine.
Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”[l]
14 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies told me this:[m] “Certainly this sin will not be forgiven as long as you live,”[n] says the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
4 Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God?[a] So whoever decides to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy. 5 Or do you think the scripture means nothing when it says,[b] “The spirit that God[c] caused[d] to live within us has an envious yearning”?[e] 6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”[f] 7 So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded.[g] 9 Grieve, mourn,[h] and weep. Turn your laughter[i] into mourning and your joy into despair. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.
