Give Thanks to the Lord
Of David.
138 (A)I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before (B)the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down (C)towards your (D)holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.[a]
3 On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.[b]
4 (E)All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of (F)the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
6 (G)For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.
7 (H)Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you (I)preserve my life;
you (J)stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your (K)right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord will (L)fulfil his purpose for me;
(M)your steadfast love, O Lord, endures for ever.
Do not forsake (N)the work of your hands.
15 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day (A)the cedar[a] went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 (B)I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, (C)when I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. (D)And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, (E)were comforted in the world below. 17 They also went down to Sheol with it, (F)to those who are slain by the sword; yes, (G)those who were its arm, (H)who lived under its shadow among the nations.
18 (I)“Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness (J)among the trees of Eden? (K)You shall be brought down with (L)the trees of Eden to the world below. (M)You shall lie among the uncircumcised, (N)with those who are slain by the sword.
(O)“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”
12 Not that we dare to classify or (A)compare ourselves with some of those who (B)are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are (C)without understanding.
13 But we will not boast (D)beyond limits, but will (E)boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, (F)to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. (G)For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labours of others. But our hope is that (H)as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be (I)greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let (J)the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is (K)not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one (L)whom the Lord commends.
