Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 18[a]
For the music director, by the Lord’s servant David, who sang[b] to the Lord the words of this song when[c] the Lord rescued him from the power[d] of all his enemies, including Saul.[e]
18 He said:[f]
“I love[g] you, Lord, my source of strength![h]
2 The Lord is my high ridge,[i] my stronghold,[j] my deliverer.
My God is my rocky summit where[k] I take shelter,[l]
my shield, the horn that saves me,[m] and my refuge.[n]
3 I called[o] to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,[p]
and I was delivered from my enemies.
4 The waves[q] of death engulfed me,
the currents[r] of chaos[s] overwhelmed me.[t]
5 The ropes of Sheol tightened around me,[u]
the snares of death trapped me.[v]
6 In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried out to my God.[w]
From his heavenly temple[x] he heard my voice;
he listened to my cry for help.[y]
7 The earth heaved and shook.[z]
The roots of the mountains[aa] trembled;[ab]
they heaved because he was angry.
8 Smoke ascended from[ac] his nose;[ad]
fire devoured as it came from his mouth.[ae]
He hurled down fiery coals.[af]
9 He made the sky sink[ag] as he descended;
a thick cloud was under his feet.
10 He mounted[ah] a winged angel[ai] and flew;
he glided[aj] on the wings of the wind.[ak]
11 He shrouded himself in darkness,[al]
in thick rain clouds.[am]
12 From the brightness in front of him came
hail and fiery coals.[an]
13 The Lord thundered[ao] in[ap] the sky;
the Most High[aq] shouted.[ar]
14 He shot his[as] arrows and scattered them,[at]
many lightning bolts[au] and routed them.[av]
15 The depths[aw] of the sea[ax] were exposed;
the inner regions[ay] of the world were uncovered
by[az] your battle cry,[ba] Lord,
by the powerful breath from your nose.[bb]
16 He reached down[bc] from above and took hold of me;
he pulled me from the surging water.[bd]
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy,[be]
from those who hate me,
for they were too strong for me.
18 They confronted[bf] me in my day of calamity,
but the Lord helped me.[bg]
19 He brought me out into a wide open place;
he delivered me because he was pleased with me.[bh]
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on that day all the fountains of the great deep[a] burst open and the floodgates of the heavens[b] were opened. 12 And the rain fell[c] on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 On that very day Noah entered the ark, accompanied by his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, along with his wife and his sons’ three wives.[d] 14 They entered,[e] along with every living creature after its kind, every animal after its kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, everything with wings.[f] 15 Pairs[g] of all creatures[h] that have the breath of life came into the ark to Noah. 16 Those that entered were male and female,[i] just as God commanded him. Then the Lord shut him in.
17 The flood engulfed the earth for forty days. As the waters increased, they lifted the ark and raised it above the earth. 18 The waters completely overwhelmed[j] the earth, and the ark floated[k] on the surface of the waters. 19 The waters completely inundated[l] the earth so that even[m] all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered. 20 The waters rose more than 20 feet[n] above the mountains.[o] 21 And all living things[p] that moved on the earth died, including the birds, domestic animals, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all humankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath[q] of life in its nostrils died. 23 So the Lord[r] destroyed[s] every living thing that was on the surface of the ground, including people, animals, creatures that creep along the ground, and birds of the sky.[t] They were wiped off the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark survived.[u] 24 The waters prevailed over[v] the earth for 150 days.
8 But God remembered[w] Noah and all the wild animals and domestic animals that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind to blow over[x] the earth and the waters receded. 2 The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed,[y] and the rain stopped falling from the sky. 3 The waters kept receding steadily[z] from the earth, so that they[aa] had gone down[ab] by the end of the 150 days. 4 On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on one of the mountains of Ararat.[ac] 5 The waters kept on receding[ad] until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible.[ae]
4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned,[a] but threw them into hell[b] and locked them up[c] in chains[d] in utter darkness,[e] to be kept until the judgment, 5 and if he did not spare the ancient world, but did protect Noah, a herald of righteousness, along with seven others,[f] when God[g] brought a flood on an ungodly world,[h] 6 and if he turned to ashes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah when he condemned them to destruction,[i] having appointed[j] them to serve as an example[k] to future generations of the ungodly,[l] 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man in anguish over the debauched lifestyle of lawless[m] men,[n] 8 (for while he lived among them day after day, that righteous man was tormented in his righteous soul[o] by the lawless deeds he saw and heard[p]) 9 —if so,[q] then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from their trials,[r] and to reserve the unrighteous for punishment[s] at the day of judgment, 10 especially those who indulge their fleshly desires[t] and who despise authority.
Brazen and insolent,[u] they are not afraid to insult[v] the glorious ones,[w]
