Version
Psalm 1

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1[a]

How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]

Jeremiah 17:1-4

17 [a] “The sin of Judah is engraved with an iron chisel
on their stone-hard[b] hearts.
It is inscribed with a diamond[c] point
on the horns of their altars.[d]
Their children are always thinking about[e] their[f] altars
and their sacred poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah,[g]
set up beside the green trees on the high hills
and on the mountains and in the fields.[h]
I will give your wealth and all your treasures away as plunder.
I will give it away as the price[i] for the sins you have committed throughout your land.
You will lose your hold on the land[j]
that I gave to you as a permanent possession.
I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you know nothing about.
For you have made my anger burn like a fire that will never be put out.”[k]

Luke 11:24-28

Response to Jesus’ Work

24 “When an unclean spirit[a] goes out of a person,[b] it passes through waterless places[c] looking for rest but[d] not finding any. Then[e] it says, ‘I will return to the home I left.’[f] 25 When it returns,[g] it finds the house[h] swept clean and put in order.[i] 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so[j] the last state of that person[k] is worse than the first.”[l]

27 As[m] he said these things, a woman in the crowd spoke out[n] to him, “Blessed is the womb[o] that bore you and the breasts at which you nursed!”[p] 28 But he replied,[q] “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey[r] it!”
