Psalm 135

In Praise of the Lord's Kindness

Shout praises to the Lord!
You are his servants,
    so praise his name.
All who serve in the temple
of the Lord our God,
    come and shout praises.
Praise the name of the Lord!
    He is kind and good.
He chose the family of Jacob
and the people of Israel
    for his very own.

The Lord is much greater
    than any other god.
He does as he chooses
in heaven and on earth
    and deep in the sea.
The Lord makes the clouds rise
    from far across the earth,
and he makes lightning
    to go with the rain.
Then from his secret place
    he sends out the wind.

The Lord killed the first-born
of people and animals
    in the land of Egypt.
God used miracles and wonders
to fight the king of Egypt
    and all of his officials.
10 He destroyed many nations
    and killed powerful kings,
11 including King Sihon
of the Amorites
    and King Og of Bashan.
He conquered every kingdom
    in the land of Canaan
12 and gave their property
    to his people Israel.

13 The name of the Lord
    will be remembered forever,
and he will be famous
    for all time to come.
14 The Lord will bring justice
and show mercy to all
    who serve him.

15 (A) Idols of silver and gold
are made and worshiped
    in other nations.
16 They have a mouth and eyes,
but they can't speak or see.
17 They are completely deaf,
    and they can't breathe.
18 Everyone who makes idols
    and all who trust them
will end up as helpless
    as their idols.

19 Everyone in Israel,
    come praise the Lord!
All the family of Aaron
20 and all the tribe of Levi,[a]
    come praise the Lord!
All of his worshipers,
    come praise the Lord.
21 Praise the Lord from Zion!
He lives here in Jerusalem.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

Isaiah 26:1-15

A Song of Victory

26 The time is coming when the people of Judah will sing this song:

“Our city[a] is protected.
The Lord is our fortress,
    and he gives us victory.
Open the city gates
for a law-abiding nation
    that is faithful to God.
The Lord gives perfect peace
to those whose faith is firm.
So always trust the Lord
because he is forever
    our mighty rock.[b]
God has put down our enemies
in their mountain city[c]
and rubbed it in the dirt.
Now the poor and abused
    trample all over that city.”

The Lord Can Be Trusted

Our Lord, you always do right,
and you make the path smooth
    for those who obey you.
You are the one we trust
    to bring about justice;
above all else we want
    your name to be honored.
Throughout the night,
    my heart searches for you,
because your decisions
show everyone on this earth
    how to live right.

10 Even when the wicked
are treated with mercy
    in this land of justice,
they do wrong and are blind
    to your glory, our Lord.
11 (A) Your hand is raised and ready
    to punish them,
but they don't see it.
    Put them to shame!
Show how much you care for us
and throw them into the fire
    intended for your enemies.

12 You will give us peace, Lord,
because everything we have done
    was by your power.
13 Others have ruled over us
besides you, our Lord God,
    but we obey only you.
14 Those enemies are now dead
    and can never live again.
You have punished them—
they are destroyed,
    completely forgotten.
15 Our nation has grown
    because of you, our Lord.
We have more land than before,
    and you are honored.

Mark 12:18-27

Life in the Future World

(Matthew 22.23-33; Luke 20.27-40)

18 (A) The Sadducees did not believe that people would rise to life after death. So some of them came to Jesus and said:

19 (B) Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother. 20 There were once seven brothers. The first one married, but died without having any children. 21 The second brother married his brother's widow, and he also died without having children. The same thing happened to the third brother, 22 and finally to all seven brothers. At last the woman died. 23 When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? After all, she had been married to all seven brothers.

24 Jesus answered:

You are completely wrong! You don't know what the Scriptures teach. And you don't know anything about the power of God. 25 When God raises people to life, they won't marry. They will be like the angels in heaven. 26 (C) You surely know about people being raised to life. You know that in the story about Moses and the burning bush, God said, “I am the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”[a] 27 He isn't the God of the dead, but of the living. You Sadducees are all wrong.
