Psalm 26:1-8

(By David.)

The Prayer of an Innocent Person

Show that I am right, Lord!
    I stay true to myself,
and I have trusted you
    without doubting.
Test my thoughts and find out
    what I am like.
I never forget your kindness,
and I am always faithful
    to you.[a]
I don't spend my time
with worthless liars
    or go with evil crowds.

I wash my hands, Lord,
    to show my innocence,
and I worship at your altar,
while gratefully singing
    about your wonders.
I love the temple
where you live, and where
    your glory shines.

Jeremiah 15:10-14

Jeremiah Complains

10 I wish I had never been born!
I'm always in trouble
    with everyone in Judah.
I never lend or borrow money,
but everyone curses me
    just the same.

11 Then the Lord replied,
“I promise to protect you,
    and when disaster comes,
even your enemies
    will beg you for help.”[a]

The Enemy Cannot Be Defeated

The Lord told me to say:

12 People of Judah,
just as you can't break iron
    mixed with bronze,
you can't defeat the enemies
that will attack
    from the north.
13 I will give them
    everything you own,
because you have sinned
    everywhere in your country.
14 My anger is a fire
    that cannot be put out,[b]
so I will make you slaves
of your enemies
    in a foreign land.[c]

Matthew 8:14-17

Jesus Heals Many People

(Mark 1.29-34; Luke 4.38-41)

14 Jesus went to the home of Peter, where he found that Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. 15 He took her by the hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and served Jesus a meal.

16 That evening many people with demons in them were brought to Jesus. And with only a word he forced out the evil spirits and healed everyone who was sick. 17 (A) So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said,

“He healed our diseases
    and made us well.”
