Psalm 12

For the director of music. According to sheminith. A psalm of David.

12 Help, Lord! No one does what is right anymore.
Those who are faithful have disappeared from the human race.
Everyone tells lies to their neighbors.
With their lips they praise others, but they don’t really mean it.

May the Lord close all lips that don’t mean what they say.
May he stop every tongue that brags.
They say, “What we speak with our tongues will win the battle.
What we say with our lips will keep us safe. No one will have victory over us.”

The Lord says, “The poor are being robbed.
Those who are in need groan.
So I will stand up to help them.
I will keep them safe from those who tell lies about them.”
The words of the Lord are perfect.
They are like silver made pure in a clay furnace.
They are like gold made pure seven times over.

Lord, you will keep needy people safe.
You will always keep sinners from hurting us.
Proud and sinful people walk around openly
when the evil they do is praised by the human race.

Proverbs 14:12-31

12 There is a way that appears to be right.
But in the end it leads to death.

13 Even when you laugh, your heart can be hurting.
And your joy can end in sadness.

14 Those who aren’t faithful will be paid back
    for what they’ve done.
And good people will receive rewards
    for how they’ve lived.

15 A childish person believes anything.
But a wise person thinks about how they live.

16 A wise person has respect for the Lord and avoids evil.
But a foolish person has a bad temper and yet feels secure.

17 Anyone who gets angry quickly does foolish things.
And a person who is tricky is hated.

18 Childish people act in keeping with their foolish ways.
But knowledge makes wise people feel like kings.

19 Evil people will bow down in front of good people.
And those who do wrong will bow down at the gates of those who do right.

20 Poor people are avoided even by their neighbors.
But rich people have many friends.

21 It is a sin to hate your neighbor.
But blessed is the person who is kind to those in need.

22 Those who plan evil go down the wrong path.
But those who plan good find love and truth.

23 All hard work pays off.
But if all you do is talk, you will be poor.

24 The wealth of wise people is their crown.
But the foolish ways of foolish people lead to what is foolish.

25 An honest witness saves lives.
But a dishonest witness tells lies.

26 Anyone who shows respect for the Lord has a strong tower.
It will be a safe place for their children.

27 Respect for the Lord is like a fountain that gives life.
It turns you away from the jaws of death.

28 A large population is a king’s glory.
But a prince without followers is destroyed.

29 Anyone who is patient has great understanding.
But anyone who gets angry quickly shows how foolish they are.

30 A peaceful heart gives life to the body.
    But jealousy rots the bones.

31 Anyone who crushes poor people makes fun of their Maker.
But anyone who is kind to those in need honors God.

Acts 4:1-12

Peter and John Are Taken to the Sanhedrin

Peter and John were speaking to the people. The priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees came up to the apostles. They were very upset by what the apostles were teaching the people. The apostles were saying that people can be raised from the dead. They said this can happen because Jesus rose from the dead. So the temple authorities arrested Peter and John. It was already evening, so they put them in prison until the next day. But many who heard the message believed. The number of men who believed grew to about 5,000.

The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas, the high priest, was there. So were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and other people in the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought to them. They wanted to question them. “By what power did you do this?” they asked. “And through whose name?”

Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit. He said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people! Are you asking us to explain our actions today? Do you want to know why we were kind to a man who couldn’t walk? Are you asking how he was healed? 10 Then listen to this, you and all the people of Israel! You nailed Jesus Christ of Nazareth to the cross. But God raised him from the dead. It is through Jesus’ name that this man stands healed in front of you. 11 Scripture says that Jesus is

“ ‘the stone you builders did not accept.
But it has become the most important stone of all.’ (Psalm 118:22)

12 You can’t be saved by believing in anyone else. God has given people no other name under heaven that will save them.”
