2 Samuel 11:26-12:10

26 When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for him.[a] 27 When the time of mourning passed, David had her brought to his palace.[b] She became his wife and she bore him a son. But what David had done upset the Lord.[c]

Nathan the Prophet Confronts David

12 So the Lord sent Nathan[d] to David. When he came to David,[e] Nathan[f] said,[g] “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a great many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing except for a little lamb he had acquired. He raised it, and it grew up alongside him and his children.[h] It used to[i] eat his food,[j] drink from his cup, and sleep in his arms.[k] It was just like a daughter to him.

“When a traveler arrived at the rich man’s home,[l] he did not want to use one of his own sheep or cattle to feed[m] the traveler who had come to visit him.[n] Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and cooked[o] it for the man who had come to visit him.”

Then David became very angry at this man. He said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die![p] Because he committed this cold-hearted crime, he must pay for the lamb four times over!”[q]

Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the Lord God of Israel has said: ‘I chose[r] you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your master’s house, and put your master’s wives into your arms.[s] I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all that somehow seems insignificant, I would have given you so much more as well! Why have you shown contempt for the Lord’s decrees[t] by doing evil in my[u] sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife to be your own wife! You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 So now the sword will never depart from your house. For you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own!’

2 Samuel 12:13-15

13 Then David exclaimed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord!” Nathan replied to David, “Yes, and the Lord has forgiven[a] your sin. You are not going to die. 14 Nonetheless, because you have treated the Lord with such contempt[b] in this matter, the son who has been born to you will certainly die.”

15 Then Nathan went to his home. The Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and the child became very ill.[c]

Psalm 32

Psalm 32[a]

By David; a well-written song.[b]

32 How blessed[c] is the one whose rebellious acts are forgiven,[d]
whose sin is pardoned.[e]
How blessed is the one[f] whose wrongdoing the Lord does not punish,[g]
in whose spirit there is no deceit.[h]
When I refused to confess my sin,[i]
my whole body wasted away,[j]
while I groaned in pain all day long.
For day and night you tormented me;[k]
you tried to destroy me[l] in the intense heat[m] of summer.[n] (Selah)
Then I confessed my sin;
I no longer covered up my wrongdoing.
I said, “I will confess[o] my rebellious acts to the Lord.”
And then you forgave my sins.[p] (Selah)
For this reason every one of your faithful followers[q] should pray to you
while there is a window of opportunity.[r]
Certainly[s] when the surging water[t] rises,
it will not reach them.[u]
You are my hiding place;
you protect me from distress.
You surround me with shouts of joy from those celebrating deliverance.[v] (Selah)
I will instruct and teach you[w] about how you should live.[x]
I will advise you as I look you in the eye.[y]
Do not be[z] like an unintelligent horse or mule,[aa]
which will not obey you
unless they are controlled by a bridle and bit.[ab]
10 An evil person suffers much pain,[ac]
but the Lord’s faithfulness overwhelms the one who trusts in him.[ad]
11 Rejoice in the Lord and be happy, you who are godly!
Shout for joy, all you who are morally upright![ae]

Galatians 2:15-21

The Justification of Jews and Gentiles

15 We are Jews by birth[a] and not Gentile sinners,[b] 16 yet we know[c] that no one[d] is justified by the works of the law[e] but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ.[f] And[g] we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ[h] and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one[i] will be justified. 17 But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves have also been found to be sinners, is Christ then one who encourages[j] sin? Absolutely not! 18 But if I build up again those things I once destroyed,[k] I demonstrate that I am one who breaks God’s law.[l] 19 For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ,[m] and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So[n] the life I now live in the body,[o] I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God,[p] who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside[q] God’s grace, because if righteousness[r] could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing![s]

Luke 7:36-8:3

Jesus’ Anointing

36 Now one of the Pharisees[a] asked Jesus[b] to have dinner with him, so[c] he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table.[d] 37 Then[e] when a woman of that town, who was a sinner, learned that Jesus[f] was dining[g] at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar[h] of perfumed oil.[i] 38 As[j] she stood[k] behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. She[l] wiped them with her hair,[m] kissed[n] them,[o] and anointed[p] them with the perfumed oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this,[q] he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,[r] he would know who and what kind of woman[s] this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 So[t] Jesus answered him,[u] “Simon, I have something to say to you.” He replied,[v] “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A certain creditor[w] had two debtors; one owed him[x] 500 silver coins,[y] and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he canceled[z] the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered,[aa] “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.”[ab] Jesus[ac] said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then,[ad] turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house. You gave me no water for my feet,[ae] but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss of greeting,[af] but from the time I entered she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet[ag] with perfumed oil. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which were many, are forgiven, thus she loved much;[ah] but the one who is forgiven little loves little.” 48 Then[ai] Jesus[aj] said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”[ak] 49 But[al] those who were at the table[am] with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 He[an] said to the woman, “Your faith[ao] has saved you;[ap] go in peace.”

Jesus’ Ministry and the Help of Women

Some time[aq] afterward[ar] he went on through towns[as] and villages, preaching and proclaiming the good news[at] of the kingdom of God.[au] The[av] twelve were with him, and also some women[aw] who had been healed of evil spirits and disabilities:[ax] Mary[ay] (called Magdalene), from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Cuza[az] (Herod’s[ba] household manager),[bb] Susanna, and many others who provided for them[bc] out of their own resources.
