Psalm 96:1-9

Psalm 96[a]

96 Sing to the Lord a new song.[b]
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord. Praise his name.
Announce every day how he delivers.[c]
Tell the nations about his splendor.
Tell[d] all the nations about his amazing deeds.
For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise;
he is more awesome than all gods.[e]
For all the gods of the nations are worthless,[f]
but the Lord made the sky.
Majestic splendor emanates from him;[g]
his sanctuary is firmly established and beautiful.[h]
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations,
ascribe to the Lord splendor and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves.[i]
Bring an offering and enter his courts.
Worship the Lord in holy attire.[j]
Tremble before him, all the earth.

1 Kings 8:31-40

31 “When someone is accused of sinning against his neighbor and the latter pronounces a curse on the alleged offender before your altar in this temple, be willing to forgive the accused if the accusation is false.[a] 32 Listen from heaven and make a just decision about your servants’ claims. Condemn the guilty party, declare the other innocent, and give both of them what they deserve.[b]

33 “The time will come when[c] your people Israel are defeated by an enemy[d] because they sinned against you. If they come back to you, renew their allegiance to you,[e] and pray for your help[f] in this temple, 34 then listen from heaven, forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.

35 “The time will come when[g] the skies are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people[h] sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you,[i] and turn away from their sin because you punish[j] them, 36 then listen from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Certainly[k] you will then teach them the right way to live[l] and send rain on your land that you have given your people to possess.[m]

37 “The time will come when the land suffers from a famine, a plague, blight and disease, or a locust[n] invasion, or when their enemy lays siege to the cities of the land,[o] or when some other type of plague or epidemic occurs. 38 When all your people Israel pray and ask for help,[p] as they acknowledge their pain[q] and spread out their hands toward this temple, 39 then listen from your heavenly dwelling place, forgive their sin,[r] and act favorably toward each one based on your evaluation of his motives.[s] (Indeed you are the only one who can correctly evaluate the motives of all people.)[t] 40 Then they will obey[u] you throughout their lifetimes as[v] they live on the land you gave to our ancestors.

Luke 4:31-37

Ministry in Capernaum

31 So[a] he went down to Capernaum,[b] a town[c] in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.[d] 32 They[e] were amazed[f] at his teaching, because he spoke[g] with authority.[h]

33 Now[i] in the synagogue[j] there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean[k] demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! Leave us alone,[l] Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One[m] of God.” 35 But[n] Jesus rebuked him:[o] “Silence! Come out of him!”[p] Then, after the demon threw the man[q] down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.[r] 36 They[s] were all amazed and began to say[t] to one another, “What’s happening here?[u] For with authority and power[v] he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 So[w] the news[x] about him spread into all areas of the region.[y]
