Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Prayer for Yahweh’s Action in the Face of Scorn
A song of ascents.[a]
123 I lift up my eyes to you,
the one enthroned[b] in the heavens.
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,[c]
as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to Yahweh our God,
until he is gracious to us.
3 Be gracious to us, O Yahweh, be gracious to us,
for long enough we have had our fill of contempt.
4 For long enough our soul has had its fill of
the derision of the self-confident,
the contempt of the arrogant.
27 So you shall speak to them all these words, but they will not listen to you, and you shall call to them, but they will not answer you.
The Valley of the Slaughter
28 “And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that has not obeyed the voice of Yahweh their God, and they have not accepted discipline. The truth has perished, and it is cut off from their mouths.[a] 29 Shear your hair and throw it[b] away, and lift up a lament on the barren heights, for Yahweh has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.’ 30 For the people [c] of Judah have done evil in my eyes,” declares[d] Yahweh, “They have set their abominations in the house that is called by my name,[e] to defile it. 31 And they built the high place of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I have not commanded, and it did not come into my mind.[f] 32 Therefore look, days are about to come,” declares[g] Yahweh, “and it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter, and they will bury in Topheth until there is no more place.[h] 33 And the dead bodies[i] of this people will be as food for the birds[j] of the heavens,[k] and for the animals[l] of the earth, without anyone to scare them[m] away. 34 And I will cause to disappear from the towns of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the sound of jubilation, and the sound of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, for the land will become a site of ruins.

18 Now when[a] Jesus saw many crowds[b] around him, he gave orders to depart to the other side.[c] 19 And a scribe approached and[d] said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go!” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 21 And another of the disciples[e] said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead!”
