Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 130
Awaiting Redemption
A song of ascents.
1 Out of the depths I call to You, Yahweh!(A)
2 Lord, listen to my voice;
let Your ears be attentive
to my cry for help.(B)
3 Yahweh, if You considered sins,
Lord, who could stand?(C)
4 But with You there is forgiveness,
so that You may be revered.(D)
34 “When the Lord heard your[a] words, He grew angry and swore an oath: 35 ‘None of these men in this evil generation will see the good land I swore to give your fathers,(A) 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land on which he has set foot, because he followed the Lord completely.’
37 “The Lord was angry with me also because of you and said: ‘You will not enter there either.(B) 38 Joshua son of Nun, who attends you, will enter it. Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to inherit it.(C) 39 Your little children, whom you said would be plunder, your sons who[b] don’t know good from evil, will enter there. I will give them the land, and they will take possession of it. 40 But you are to turn back and head for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea.’(D)
Our Future after Death
5 For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling[a](A) is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling[b] in the heavens,(B) not made with hands.(C) 2 Indeed, we groan in this body, desiring(D) to put on our dwelling from heaven, 3 since, when we are clothed,[c] we will not be found naked.(E) 4 Indeed, we groan while we are in this tent, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality(F) may be swallowed up by life. 5 And the One who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.
