Psalm 6

Psalm 6

A Prayer for Mercy

For the choir director: with stringed instruments, according to Sheminith.(A) A psalm of David.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger;
do not discipline me in your wrath.(B)
Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am weak;[a](C)
heal me,(D) Lord, for my bones are shaking;(E)
my whole being is shaken with terror.(F)
And you, Lord—how long?(G)

Turn, Lord! Rescue me;
save me because of your faithful love.(H)
For there is no remembrance of you in death;
who can thank you in Sheol?(I)

I am weary from my groaning;(J)
with my tears I dampen my bed
and drench my couch every night.(K)
My eyes are swollen from grief;(L)
they grow old because of all my enemies.

Depart from me, all evildoers,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.(M)
The Lord has heard my plea for help;(N)
the Lord accepts my prayer.(O)
10 All my enemies will be ashamed and shake with terror;
they will turn back(P) and suddenly be disgraced.(Q)

Job 30:16-31

16 Now my life is poured out before me,
and days of suffering(A) have seized me.
17 Night pierces my bones,
but my gnawing pains never rest.(B)
18 My clothing is distorted with great force;
he chokes me by the neck of my garment.[a]
19 He throws me into the mud,
and I have become like dust and ashes.(C)

20 I cry out to you for help, but you do not answer me;(D)
when I stand up, you merely look at me.
21 You have turned against me with cruelty;
you harass(E) me with your strong hand.
22 You lift me up on the wind and make me ride it;
you scatter me in the storm.(F)
23 Yes, I know that you will lead me to death—
the place(G) appointed for all who live.

24 Yet no one would stretch out his hand
against a ruined person[b]
when he cries out to him for help
because of his distress.(H)
25 Have I not wept for those who have fallen on hard times?
Has my soul not grieved for the needy?(I)
26 But when I hoped for good, evil came;
when I looked for light, darkness(J) came.
27 I am churning within[c] and cannot rest;
days of suffering confront me.
28 I walk about blackened, but not by the sun.[d]
I stood in the assembly and cried out for help.
29 I have become a brother to jackals
and a companion of ostriches.
30 My skin blackens and flakes off,[e]
and my bones burn with fever.(K)
31 My lyre is used for mourning
and my flute for the sound of weeping.(L)

John 4:46-54

The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son

46 He went again to Cana(A) of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.(B) 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(C) into Galilee, he went to him and pleaded with him to come down and heal his son, since he was about to die.

48 Jesus told him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders,(D) you will not believe.”(E)

49 “Sir,”(F) the official said to him, “come down before my boy dies.”

50 “Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what[a] Jesus said to him and departed.

51 While he was still going down, his servants met him saying that his boy was alive. 52 He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at one in the afternoon[b] the fever left him,” they answered. 53 The father(G) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole household.

54 Now this was also the second sign(H) Jesus performed after he came from Judea to Galilee.(I)
