Version
Psalm 52

Psalm 52[a]

For the music director, a well-written song[b] by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: “David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech.”[c]

52 Why do you boast about your evil plans,[d] O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long.[e]
Your tongue carries out your destructive plans;[f]
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver.[g]
You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.[h] (Selah)
You love to use all the words that destroy,[i]
and the tongue that deceives.
Yet[j] God will make you a permanent heap of ruins.[k]
He will scoop you up[l] and remove you from your home;[m]
he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah)
When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe,
and will mock the evildoer, saying:[n]
“Look, here is the man who would not make[o] God his protector.
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”[p]
But I[q] am like a flourishing[r] olive tree in the house of God;
I continually[s] trust in God’s loyal love.
I will continually[t] thank you when[u] you execute judgment;[v]
I will rely on[w] you,[x] for your loyal followers know you are good.[y]

Job 28:12-28

No Price Can Buy Wisdom

12 “But wisdom—where can it be found?
Where is the place of understanding?
13 Mankind does not know its place;[a]
it cannot be found in the land of the living.
14 The deep[b] says, ‘It is not with[c] me.’
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15 Fine gold cannot be given in exchange for it,
nor can its price be weighed out in silver.
16 It cannot be measured out for purchase[d] with the gold of Ophir,
with precious onyx[e] or sapphires.
17 Neither gold nor crystal[f] can be compared with it,
nor can a vase[g] of gold match its worth.
18 Of coral and jasper no mention will be made;
the price[h] of wisdom is more than pearls.[i]
19 The topaz of Cush[j] cannot be compared with it;
it cannot be purchased with pure gold.

God Alone Has Wisdom

20 “But wisdom—where does it come from?[k]
Where is the place of understanding?
21 For[l] it has been hidden
from the eyes of every living creature,
and from the birds of the sky it has been concealed.
22 Destruction[m] and Death say,
‘With our ears we have heard a rumor about where it can be found.’[n]
23 God understands the way to it,
and he alone knows its place.
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth
and observes everything under the heavens.
25 When he made[o] the force of the wind
and measured[p] the waters with a gauge,
26 when he imposed a limit[q] for the rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,[r]
27 then he looked at wisdom[s] and assessed its value;[t]
he established[u] it and examined it closely.[v]
28 And he said to mankind,
‘The fear of the Lord[w]—that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”[x]

Matthew 7:13-20

The Narrow Gate

13 “Enter[a] through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 How[b] narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life,[c] and there are few who find it!

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Watch out for false prophets,[d] who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves.[e] 16 You will recognize them by their fruit. Grapes are not gathered[f] from thorns or figs from thistles, are they?[g] 17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad[h] tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree is not able to bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree to bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, you will recognize them by their fruit.
