Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
18 “Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol[a] on your foreheads.[b] 19 Teach them to your children,(A) talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates,(B) 21 so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your days and those of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.(C)
A Blessing and a Curse
26 “Look, today I set before you a blessing and a curse:(A) 27 there will be a blessing, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God I am giving you today, 28 and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the Lord your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known.
Psalm 31
A Plea for Protection
For the choir director. A psalm of David.
1 Lord, I seek refuge in you;
let me never be disgraced.(A)
Save me by your righteousness.
2 Listen closely to me; rescue me quickly.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a mountain fortress to save me.(B)
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;(C)
you lead and guide me
for your name’s sake.(D)
4 You will free me from the net
that is secretly set for me,
for you are my refuge.(E)
5 Into your hand I entrust my spirit;(F)
you have redeemed me,[a] Lord, God of truth.(G)
19 How great is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you.
In the presence of everyone[a] you have acted
for those who take refuge in you.(A)
20 You hide them in the protection of your presence;(B)
you conceal them in a shelter
from human schemes,
from quarrelsome tongues.(C)
21 Blessed be the Lord,
for he has wondrously shown his faithful love to me
in a city under siege.(D)
22 In my alarm I said,
“I am cut off from your sight.”(E)
But you heard the sound of my pleading
when I cried to you for help.(F)
The Righteous Will Live by Faith
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,[a](A) because it is the power of God for salvation(B) to everyone who believes, first to the Jew,(C) and also to the Greek.(D) 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith,[b](E) just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.[c][d](F)
22 The righteousness of God is through faith(A) in Jesus Christ[a](B) to all who believe,(C) since there is no distinction.(D) 23 For all have sinned(E) and fall short of the[b] glory of God; 24 they are justified freely by his grace(F) through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.(G) 25 God presented him as the mercy seat[c](H) by his blood,(I) through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God(J) passed over the sins previously committed.(K) 26 God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
Boasting Excluded
27 Where, then, is boasting?(L) It is excluded. By what kind of law?[d](M) By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law[e] of faith. 28 For we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(N)
29 Or is God the God of Jews only?(A) Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is one God(B) who will justify the circumcised by faith(C) and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not!(D) On the contrary, we uphold the law.(E)
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,(A) but only the one who does the will(B) of my Father in heaven.(C) 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons(D) in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’(E) 23 Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!’[a][b](F)
The Two Foundations
24 “Therefore,(G) everyone who hears these words(H) of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(I) the crowds were astonished at his teaching,(J) 29 because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
