Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 38[a]
A psalm of David, written to get God’s attention.[b]
38 O Lord, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger.
Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury.[c]
2 For your arrows pierce[d] me,
and your hand presses me down.[e]
3 My whole body is sick because of your judgment;[f]
I am deprived of health because of my sin.[g]
4 For my sins overwhelm me;[h]
like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
5 My wounds[i] are infected and starting to smell,[j]
because of my foolish sins.[k]
6 I am dazed[l] and completely humiliated;[m]
all day long I walk around mourning.
7 For I am overcome with shame,[n]
and my whole body is sick.[o]
8 I am numb with pain and severely battered;[p]
I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.[q]
9 O Lord, you understand my heart’s desire;[r]
my groaning is not hidden from you.
10 My heart beats quickly;
my strength leaves me.
I can hardly see.[s]
11 Because of my condition,[t] even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance;[u]
my neighbors stand far away.[v]
12 Those who seek my life try to entrap me;[w]
those who want to harm me speak destructive words.
All day long they say deceitful things.
13 But I am like a deaf man—I hear nothing;
I am like a mute who cannot speak.[x]
14 I am like a man who cannot hear
and is incapable of arguing his defense.[y]
15 Yet[z] I wait for you, O Lord!
You will respond, O Lord, my God!
16 I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me;[aa]
when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.[ab]
17 For I am about to stumble,
and I am in constant pain.[ac]
18 Yes,[ad] I confess my wrongdoing,
and I am concerned about my sins.
19 But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous;[ae]
those who hate me without cause outnumber me.[af]
20 They repay me evil for the good I have done;
though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.[ag]
21 Do not abandon me, O Lord.
My God, do not remain far away from me.
22 Hurry and help me,[ah] O Lord, my deliverer.
The People of Jerusalem Pray
5 [a] O Lord, reflect on[b] what has happened to us;
consider[c] and look at[d] our disgrace.
2 Our inheritance[e] is turned over to strangers;
foreigners now occupy our homes.[f]
3 We have become fatherless orphans;
our mothers have become widows.
4 We must pay money[g] for our own water;[h]
we must buy our own wood at a steep price.[i]
5 We are pursued—they are breathing down our necks;[j]
we are weary and have no rest.[k]
6 We have submitted[l] to Egypt and Assyria
in order to buy food to eat.[m]
7 Our forefathers[n] sinned and are dead,[o]
but we[p] suffer[q] their punishment.[r]
8 Slaves[s] rule over us;
there is no one to rescue us from their power.[t]
9 At the risk[u] of our lives[v] we get our food[w]
because robbers lurk[x] in the wilderness.
10 Our skin is as hot as an oven
due to a fever from hunger.[y]
11 They raped[z] women in Zion,
virgins in the towns of Judah.
12 Princes were hung by their hands;
elders were mistreated.[aa]
13 The young men perform menial labor;[ab]
boys stagger from their labor.[ac]
14 The elders are gone from the city gate;
the young men have stopped playing their music.
15 Our hearts no longer have any joy;[ad]
our dancing is turned to mourning.
16 The crown has fallen from our head;
woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 Because of this, our hearts are sick;[ae]
because of these things, we can hardly see[af] through our tears.[ag]
18 For wild animals[ah] are prowling over Mount Zion,
which lies desolate.
19 But you, O Lord, reign forever;
your throne endures from generation to generation.
20 Why do you keep on forgetting[ai] us?
Why do you forsake us so long?
21 Bring us back to yourself, O Lord, so that we may return[aj] to you;
renew our life[ak] as in days before,[al]
22 unless[am] you have utterly rejected us[an]
and are angry with us beyond measure.[ao]
19 So Jesus answered them,[a] “I tell you the solemn truth,[b] the Son can do nothing on his own initiative,[c] but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[d] does, the Son does likewise.[e] 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does, and will show him greater deeds than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,[f] so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.[g] 22 Furthermore, the Father does not judge[h] anyone, but has assigned[i] all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all people[j] will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 “I tell you the solemn truth,[k] the one who hears[l] my message[m] and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned,[n] but has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the solemn truth,[o] a time[p] is coming—and is now here—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself, 27 and he has granted the Son[q] authority to execute judgment,[r] because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, because a time[s] is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out—the ones who have done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil to the resurrection resulting in condemnation.[t]
