Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Thanksgiving for Yahweh’s Goodness
Of David.[a]
138 I give you thanks with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise.
2 I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have magnified your word[b] according to all your name.[c]
3 When[d] I called and you answered me,
you emboldened me in my soul with strength.
4 All the kings of the earth
will praise you, O Yahweh,
when they have heard the words[e] of your mouth,
5 and they will sing of the ways of Yahweh,
because Yahweh’s glory is great.
6 Though Yahweh is high, yet he sees the lowly,
but the proud he perceives[f] at a distance.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve me alive.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my enemies,
and you save me with your right hand.
8 Yahweh accomplishes things for my benefit.
O Yahweh, your loyal love endures forever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.
11 And the word of Yahweh came[a] to me, saying,[b] 12 “Son of man,[c] raise a lament over the king of Tyre, and you must say to him, ‘thus says the Lord Yahweh:
“You were a perfect model of[d] an example,
full of wisdom and perfect of beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God,
and every precious stone was your adornment:
carnelian, topaz and moonstone,[e]
turquoise, onyx and jasper,
sapphire,[f] malachite and emerald.
And gold was the craftsmanship of your settings
and your mountings in you;
on the day when you were created they were prepared.
14 You were an anointed guardian cherub,
and I placed you on God’s holy mountain;[g]
you walked in the midst of stones of fire.
15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day when you were created,[h]
until wickedness was found in you.
16 In the abundance of your trading,
they filled the midst of you with violence, and you sinned;
and I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,
and I expelled you, the guardian[i] cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you ruined your wisdom because of your splendor.
I threw you on the ground before[j] kings;
I have exposed you for viewing.[k]
18 From the abundance of your iniquities
in the dishonesty of your trading,
I profaned your sanctuaries
and I brought fire from your midst;
it consumed you, and I have turned you to ashes on the earth
before the eyes of everyone who sees you.[l]
19 All who know you[m] among the peoples
are appalled over you;
you have become as horrors,
and you shall cease to exist forever.”’”[n]
Lawsuits between Believers
6 Does anyone among you, if he[a] has a matter against someone else, dare to go to court before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if by you the world is judged, are you unworthy of the most insignificant courts? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels, not to mention ordinary matters? 4 Therefore, if you have courts with regard to ordinary matters, do you seat[b] these despised people in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. So is there not anyone wise among you who will be able to render a decision between his brothers? 6 But brother goes to court with brother, and this before unbelievers! 7 Therefore it is already completely a loss for you that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? 8 But you wrong and defraud, and do this to brothers!
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Neither sexually immoral people, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor passive homosexual partners, nor dominant homosexual partners, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, not drunkards, not abusive persons, not swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And some of you were these things, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus[c] and by the Spirit of our God.
