Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Pe
129 Your testimonies are (A)wonderful;
Therefore my soul (B)observes them.
130 The (C)unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives (D)understanding to the simple.
131 I (E)opened my mouth wide and (F)panted,
For I (G)longed for Your commandments.
132 (H)Turn to me and be gracious to me,
According to Your judgment [a]for those who love Your name.
133 Establish my (I)steps in Your [b]word,
And do not let any wickedness (J)overpower me.
134 (K)Redeem me from the oppression of man,
That I may keep Your precepts.
135 (L)Make Your face shine upon Your slave,
And (M)teach me Your statutes.
136 My eyes [c]shed (N)streams of water,
Because they (O)do not keep Your law.
Solomon Anointed King
38 So (A)Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, (B)the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to (C)Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest then (D)took the horn of oil from the tent and (E)anointed Solomon. Then they (F)blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “(G)Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, and the people [a]were playing on flutes and were glad with great gladness, so that the earth [b]shook at their sound.
41 And Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. Then Joab heard the sound of the trumpet and said, “Why is the sound of the city such an uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, (H)Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah said, “Come in, for (I)you are a valiant man and bring good news.” 43 But Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has also sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule. 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there with gladness, (J)so that the city is in an uproar. This is the sound which you have heard. 46 And also, (K)Solomon has even taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom. 47 And also, the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May (L)your God make the name of Solomon better than your name and his throne greater than your throne!’ And (M)the king bowed himself on the bed. 48 And also, the king said thus, ‘Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who (N)has granted one to sit on my throne today while my own eyes see it.’”
44 “Our fathers had (A)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He, who spoke to Moses, directed him to make it (B)according to the pattern which he had seen. 45 And having received it in their turn, our fathers (C)brought it in with [a]Joshua when they dispossessed the [b]nations whom God drove out before our fathers, until the time of David. 46 (D)David found favor in the sight of God, and (E)asked that he might find a dwelling place for the [c]God of Jacob. 47 But (F)Solomon built a house for Him. 48 However, (G)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says:
49 ‘(H)Heaven is My throne,
And earth is the footstool of My feet.
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
‘Or what place is there for My rest?
50 (I)Was it not My hand which made all these things?’
51 “You men—(J)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears—are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 (K)And which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of (L)the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers (M)you have now become; 53 you who received the Law as (N)ordained by angels, and yet did not observe it.”
