Psalm 65:1-8

This psalm is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We trust God to save us[a]

65 God, it is right for us to praise you in Zion.
There, we will offer to you
the gifts that we have promised.
You answer our prayers.
All of us must come to you,
    because of our many sins.
Our sins are too heavy for us to carry,
but you forgive the bad things that we do against you.[b]
You have blessed each person that you have chosen.
You let them live near to you in your home.
The good things that are in your holy temple
    will make us very happy!
God, you are the one who saves us!
You answer our prayers,
and you do great things to rescue us.
People from everywhere on earth trust in you,
even those who live far away across the seas.
You used your power to make the mountains,
and you showed how strong you are.
You stop the seas from being angry,
so that their waters make no noise.[c]
You do the same with the angry nations.
People who live far away see
the great things that you have done.
It makes them afraid.
Everywhere on earth, east and west,
people sing happy songs to praise you.

Psalm 65:9-13

You take care of the land.
You send rain to make the earth good for plants.
Your rivers are full of water.
You cause the earth to give good crops
so that the people have grain to eat.
10 When people plough their fields,
you send rain to make the earth wet.
You make the ground soft with the rain,
    so that crops grow there.
11 Every year at harvest time,
you bless people with lots of good things.
Everywhere that you go,
    there is plenty of food.[a]
12 Fresh grass covers the fields in the wilderness.
There are plenty of good things all over the hills,
so that people are very happy.
13 The fields are full of sheep.
The valleys are covered with crops.
Everywhere seems to shout and sing for joy!

Isaiah 48:1-5

The Lord warns his people

48 Listen to this, family of Jacob. You are called ‘Israel’, and you are Judah's descendants.[a] You use the name of the Lord when you make promises. You pray to Israel's God. But you do not do those things honestly and fairly. Your people are proud to say that they live in the holy city. They trust in Israel's God, whose name is the Lord Almighty.

The Lord says to his people,

‘I already spoke about things that would happen at a future time.
A long time ago I told you what would happen.
Then I suddenly did my work,
and I caused those things to happen!
I did it because I know what you are like.
    You refuse to obey me.
You do not want to change the way that you live.
Your neck is like iron and it will not bend!
Your head is as hard as bronze!
So I told you about these things a long time ago.
Before they happened, I told you about them.
Then you could not say, “My idol did them.
Yes, my wooden image and my idol made of metal
decided that these things would happen.”

Romans 2:12-16

12 The Gentiles do not have God's Law that he gave to Moses.[a] If Gentiles do wrong things, God will punish them. But he will not use his Law when he judges the Gentiles. But the Jews do have God's Law. So, if Jews do wrong things, God will use his Law to judge them. The Law will show that they have done wrong things. 13 Who does God accept as right with himself? It is those people who obey his Law. It is not the people who only know his Law but do not obey them.

14 The Gentiles do not have God's Law. But they may still do the right things that the Law teaches. They do right things because of what they themselves think is right. In that way they are showing that they have a certain law in their minds, even though they do not know God's Law. 15 Those people show that they know what is right. It is as if God has written his Law deep inside them. Their thoughts tell them the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes their thoughts say: ‘You did something that is wrong.’ And sometimes their thoughts say: ‘You did what is right.’

16 That is the message that I tell people. God knows everything that people think secretly. One day he will judge everyone. He has given Jesus Christ the authority to do that.
