Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
12 Blessed is the (A)nation whose God is Yahweh,
The people whom He has (B)chosen for His own inheritance.
13 Yahweh (C)looks from heaven;
He (D)sees all the sons of men;
14 From (E)the place of His habitation He gazes
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (F)forms [a]the hearts of them all,
He who (G)understands all their works.
16 (H)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A (I)horse is a false hope for salvation;
Nor does it provide escape to anyone by its great strength.
18 Behold, (J)the eye of Yahweh is on those who fear Him,
On those who (K)wait for His lovingkindness,
19 To (L)deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive (M)in famine.
20 Our soul (N)is patient for Yahweh;
He is our (O)help and our shield.
21 For our (P)heart is glad in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, be upon us,
As we wait for You.
Israel at Sinai
19 (A)In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the wilderness of (B)Sinai. 2 Then they set out from (C)Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of (D)the mountain.
3 Now Moses went up to God, and (E)Yahweh called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: 4 ‘(F)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you up on (G)eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 So now then, (H)if you will indeed listen to My voice and (I)keep My covenant, then you shall be (J)My treasured possession among all the peoples, for (K)all the earth is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me (L)a kingdom of priests and (M)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
7 (N)So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words which Yahweh had commanded him. 8 (O)And all the people answered together and said, “All that Yahweh has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to Yahweh. 9 Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in (P)a thick cloud, so that the (Q)people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 And when (A)the day of Pentecost [a]had fully come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing (B)wind, and it filled (C)the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues like fire [b](D)distributing themselves, and [c]they [d]rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all (E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to (F)speak with other [e]tongues, as the Spirit was giving them [f]utterance.
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, (G)devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when (H)this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own [g]language. 7 (I)So they were astounded and marveling, saying, “Behold, are not all these who are speaking (J)Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own [h]language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and (K)Cappadocia, (L)Pontus and [i](M)Asia, 10 (N)Phrygia and (O)Pamphylia, Egypt and the district of Libya around (P)Cyrene, and [j](Q)visitors from Rome, both Jews and [k](R)proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”
