Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
8 Oh, bless our God, you peoples!
And make the voice of His praise to be heard,
9 Who keeps our soul among the living,
And does not allow our feet to [a]be moved.
10 For (A)You, O God, have tested us;
(B)You have refined us as silver is refined.
11 (C)You brought us into the net;
You laid affliction on our backs.
12 (D)You have caused men to ride over our heads;
(E)We went through fire and through water;
But You brought us out to [b]rich fulfillment.
13 (F)I will go into Your house with burnt offerings;
(G)I will pay You my [c]vows,
14 Which my lips have uttered
And my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer You burnt sacrifices of fat animals,
With the sweet aroma of rams;
I will offer bulls with goats. Selah
16 Come and hear, all you who fear God,
And I will declare what He has done for my soul.
17 I cried to Him with my mouth,
And He was [d]extolled with my tongue.
18 (H)If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear.
19 But certainly God (I)has heard me;
He has attended to the voice of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer,
Nor His mercy from me!
5 Then [a]the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (A)intent[b] of the thoughts of his heart was only evil [c]continually. 6 And (B)the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and (C)He was grieved in His (D)heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will (E)destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah (F)found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah Pleases God
9 This is the genealogy of Noah. (G)Noah was a just man, [d]perfect in his generations. Noah (H)walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: (I)Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt (J)before God, and the earth was (K)filled with violence. 12 So God (L)looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for (M)all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
The Ark Prepared(N)
13 And God said to Noah, (O)“The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; (P)and behold, (Q)I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make [e]rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred [f]cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (R)And behold, I Myself am bringing (S)floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall (T)die. 18 But I will establish My (U)covenant with you; and (V)you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring (W)two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind (X)will come to you to keep them alive. 21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.”
22 (Y)Thus Noah did; (Z)according to all that (AA)God commanded him, so he did.
The Voyage to Rome Begins
27 And when (A)it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Regiment. 2 So, entering a ship of Adramyttium, we put to sea, meaning to sail along the coasts of Asia. (B)Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, was with us. 3 And the next day we landed at Sidon. And Julius (C)treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends and receive care. 4 When we had put to sea from there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. 5 And when we had sailed over the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. 6 There the centurion found (D)an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy, and he put us on board.
7 When we had sailed slowly many days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, the wind not permitting us to proceed, we sailed under the shelter of (E)Crete off Salmone. 8 Passing it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.
Paul’s Warning Ignored
9 Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous (F)because [a]the Fast was already over, Paul advised them, 10 saying, “Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.” 11 Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul. 12 And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there.
