Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
When Israel Went Out from Egypt
114 When Israel went out (A)from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of (B)strange language,
2 Judah became (C)His sanctuary,
Israel, (D)His dominion.
Jonah’s Prayer
2 [a]Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God (A)from the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said,
“I (B)called out of my distress to Yahweh,
And He answered me.
I cried for help from the belly of (C)Sheol;
You heard my voice.
3 For You had (D)cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current surrounded me.
All Your (E)breakers and waves passed over me.
4 So I said, ‘I have been (F)driven away from [b]Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again (G)toward Your holy temple.’
5 (H)Water encompassed me to my very soul.
The great (I)deep surrounded me,
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 I (J)went down to the [c]base of the mountains.
The earth with its (K)bars closed behind me forever,
But You have (L)brought up my life from [d]the pit, O Yahweh my God.
7 While my soul was (M)fainting within me,
I (N)remembered Yahweh,
And my (O)prayer came to You,
To (P)Your holy temple.
8 Those who (Q)regard worthless idols
Forsake their lovingkindness,
9 But as for me, I will (R)sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving.
That which I have vowed I will (S)pay.
(T)Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10 Then Yahweh spoke to the (U)fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered and said to Him, “Teacher, (A)we want to see [a]a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “(B)An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as (C)Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will (D)the Son of Man be (E)three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (F)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because (G)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, (H)something greater than Jonah is here. 42 (I)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, (J)something greater than Solomon is here.
