Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Voice of Yahweh
A Psalm of David.
29 (A)Ascribe to Yahweh, O [a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name;
Worship Yahweh (B)in the splendor of holiness.
3 The (C)voice of Yahweh is upon the waters;
The God of glory (D)thunders,
Yahweh is over [b](E)many waters.
4 The voice of Yahweh is (F)powerful,
The voice of Yahweh is full of splendor.
5 The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars;
Indeed, Yahweh breaks in pieces (G)the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon (H)skip like a calf,
And (I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of Yahweh hews out [c]flames of fire.
8 The voice of Yahweh causes the wilderness to tremble;
Yahweh causes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh to tremble.
9 The voice of Yahweh makes (K)the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And (L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”
10 Then Yahweh came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your slave is listening.” 11 And Yahweh said to Samuel, “Behold, (A)I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 In that day (B)I will establish against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 And (C)I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for (D)the iniquity which he knew because (E)his sons have been bringing a curse on themselves, but (F)he did not rebuke them. 14 Now therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that (G)the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”
15 So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he (H)opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. But Samuel was afraid to tell (I)the vision to Eli. 16 Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” 17 And he said, “What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. (J)May God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the words that He spoke to you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “(K)It is Yahweh; let Him do what seems good in His eyes.”
19 Thus (L)Samuel grew, and (M)Yahweh was with him and (N)let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 So all Israel (O)from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of Yahweh. 21 And (P)Yahweh appeared again at Shiloh, (Q)because Yahweh revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of Yahweh.
The Philistines Take the Ark
4 Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside (R)Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped in (S)Aphek.
10 Now there was a disciple at (A)Damascus named (B)Ananias, and the Lord said to him in (C)a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from (D)Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen [a]in a vision a man named Ananias come in and (E)lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, (F)how much harm he did to (G)Your [b]saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he (H)has authority from the chief priests to bind all who (I)call on Your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for (J)he is a chosen [c]instrument of Mine, to bear My name before (K)the Gentiles and (L)kings and the sons of Israel; 16 for (M)I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.” 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And he (N)laid his hands on him and said, “(O)Brother Saul, the Lord sent me—that is Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming—so that you may regain your sight and be (P)filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he rose up and was baptized; 19 and he took food and was strengthened.
