Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Victorious King
Psalm 21
1 For the music director, a psalm of David.
2 Adonai, the king rejoices in Your strength!
How greatly he delights in Your salvation.
3 You granted him his heart’s desire,
and You did not withhold the request of his lips. Selah
4 For You met him with the best blessings.
You set on his head a crown of pure gold.
5 He asked You for life, You gave it to him,
length of days forever and ever.
6 His glory is great through Your salvation.
Honor and majesty You bestow on him.
7 For You bestow on him eternal blessings,
gladden him with joy in Your presence.
8 For the king trusts in Adonai,
and in the lovingkindness of Elyon
he will not be shaken.
9 Your hand will find all your enemies.
Your right hand will overtake those who hate You.
10 You will make them like a fiery furnace
at the time of your appearing.
In His wrath Adonai will swallow them up
and fire will consume them.
11 You destroy their offspring from earth,
their seed from the children of men.
12 Though they intended evil against You
and devised a plot, they cannot succeed.
13 For You make them turn their backs.
You aim Your bowstrings at their faces.
14 Be exalted, Adonai, in Your strength!
We will sing and praise Your might.
Curse of Empty Land
24 Behold, Adonai makes the land empty
and makes it waste,
twists its face,
and scatters its inhabitants.
2 So it shall be:
as with the people, so with the kohen,
as with a servant, so with his master,
as with a maid, so with her mistress,
as with a buyer, so with the seller,
as with a lender, so with the borrower,
as with a creditor, so with the debtor.
3 The land will be utterly emptied,
and totally plundered.
For Adonai has spoken this word.
4 The land faints and fades away,
The world wilts and fades away,
The exalted people of the earth wilt.
5 The land is polluted by its inhabitants,
for they have transgressed Torah,
violated statutes,
and broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore a curse will devour the land.
Those dwelling there are found guilty.
Therefore the inhabitants of the land will be burned up,
so the people remaining are few.
7 The new wine fails, the vine wilts,
all the merry-hearted sigh.
8 The glee of tambourines stops,
the noise of revelers ends,
the joy of the harp ceases.
9 They no longer drink wine with song.
Liquor is bitter to those drinking it.
10 The shattered city is in chaos.
Every house is shut up, none may enter.
11 In the streets is an outcry for wine;
all joy becomes dark as evening;
the mirth of the land is banished.
12 The city is left in ruins;
the gate is battered down.
Last Days’ Judgments
13 So will it be in the earth and among the nations,
as when shaking an olive tree,
or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
14 They will raise their voices,
They will sing for joy, of the majesty of Adonai
they shout from the sea.
15 ‘Therefore glorify Adonai in the east,
the Name of Adonai, the God of Israel,
in the isles of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we have heard songs:
“Glory to the righteous!”
But I say, “I waste away, I waste away!
Oy to me! Traitors betray!
With treachery traitors betray!”
Walking in Sanctification
4 Finally then, brothers and sisters, we ask you and appeal in the Lord Yeshua—just as you received from us the way you ought to walk and please God (as in fact you are walking)—that you keep progressing more and more. [a] 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Yeshua. 3 For this is the will of God—your sanctification:[b]
to abstain from sexual immorality;
4 to know, each of you, how to gain control over his own body[c] in holiness and honor— 5 not in the passion of lust like the pagans who do not know God;
6 and not to overstep his brother and take advantage of him in this matter—
because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly warned you. 7 For God did not call us to impurity, but in holiness. 8 Consequently, the one who rejects this is not rejecting man, but God, who gives His Ruach ha-Kodesh to you.
9 Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write you—for you yourselves are taught by God[d] to love one another. 10 In fact, you even practice it toward all your brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to keep progressing more and more 11 and aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, just as we directed you— 12 so you may behave properly toward outsiders and not have need of anything.
