Habakkuk 1:1-4

Learning How to Trust God

This is the message that was given to Habakkuk the prophet.

Habakkuk Complains

Lord, I continue to ask for help.
How long will you ignore me?
I cry out to you about violence,
but you do not save us!
Why do you let me see wrong things?
Why do you put up with evil?
People are destroying things and hurting others while I am looking.
    They are arguing and fighting.
People are not forced to obey the teachings.
No one receives a fair trial.
Evil people gain while good people lose.
The judges no longer make fair decisions.

Habakkuk 2:1-4

I will stand like a guard to watch.
I will stand on the tower.
I will wait to see what the Lord will say to me.
I will wait to learn how to answer his complaint.

The Lord Answers

The Lord answered me:

“Write down what I show you.
Write it clearly on stone tablets
so whoever reads it can run to tell others.
It is not yet time for the message to come true.
But that time is coming soon.
    The message will come true.
It may seem like a long time before it happens.
But be patient and wait for it.
These things will happen.
    They will not be delayed.
See, the nation that is evil and trusts in itself will fail.
But those who do right because they trust in God will live.

Psalm 37:1-9

God Will Reward Fairly

Of David.

37 Don’t be upset because of evil people.
Don’t be jealous of those who do wrong.
Like the grass, they will soon dry up.
Like green plants, they will soon die away.

Trust the Lord and do good.
Live in the land and enjoy its safety.
Enjoy serving the Lord.
And he will give you what you want.
Depend on the Lord.
Trust him, and he will take care of you.
Then your goodness will shine like the sun.
Your fairness will shine like the noonday sun.

Wait and trust the Lord.
Don’t be upset when others get rich
or when someone else’s plans succeed.
Don’t get angry.
Don’t be upset; it only leads to trouble.
Evil people will be sent away.
But people who trust the Lord will inherit the land.

2 Timothy 1:1-14

Paul Encourages Timothy

From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God. God sent me to tell about the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

To Timothy, a dear son to me. Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I always remember you in my prayers, day and night. And I thank God for you in these prayers. He is the God my ancestors served. And I serve him, doing what I know is right. I remember that you cried for me. And I want very much to see you so that I can be filled with joy. I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother Lois and to your mother Eunice. And I know that you now have that same faith. That is why I remind you to use the gift God gave you. God gave you that gift when I laid my hands on[a] you. Now let it grow, as a small flame grows into a fire. God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid. He gave us a spirit of power and love and self-control.

So do not be ashamed to tell people about our Lord Jesus. And do not be ashamed of me. I am in prison for the Lord. But suffer with me for the Good News. God gives us the strength to do that. God saved us and made us his holy people. That was not because of anything we did ourselves but because of what he wanted and because of his grace. That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before time began. 10 It was not shown to us until our Savior Christ Jesus came. Jesus destroyed death. And through the Good News, he showed us the way to have life that cannot be destroyed. 11 I was chosen to tell that Good News and to be an apostle and a teacher. 12 And I suffer now because I tell the Good News. But I am not ashamed. I know Jesus, the One I have believed in. And I am sure that he is able to protect what he has trusted me with until that Day.[b] 13 Follow the true teachings you heard from me. Follow them as an example of the faith and love we have in Christ Jesus. 14 Protect the truth that you were given. Protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Luke 17:5-10

How Big Is Your Faith?

The apostles said to the Lord, “Give us more faith!”

The Lord said, “If your faith is as big as a mustard seed,[a] then you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Dig yourself up and plant yourself in the sea!’ And the tree will obey you.

Be Good Servants

“Suppose one of you has a servant who has been plowing the ground or caring for the sheep. When the servant comes in from working in the field, would you say, ‘Come in and sit down to eat’? No, you would say to your servant, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Then get yourself ready and serve me. When I finish eating and drinking, then you can eat and drink.’ The servant does not get any special thanks for doing what his master told him to do. 10 It is the same with you. When you do everything you are told to do, you should say, ‘We don’t deserve any special thanks. We have only done the work we should do.’”
